Different performance conditions on 1st round picks. Tiered down to 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th based on games/pts limits for 2022 & 2023 similar but only few tiers based on playoff criteria (3rd rnd+ in 22 or 23 is 1st, if make playoffs both years 2nd, if no playoffs during first 2 years becomes 3rd). So if Eichel doesn't play well over first 2 seasons, is injured whole time or team misses playoffs then Backlund (who will be 35 in 2 years), Valimaki (who is being outplayed by Kylington) & 2nd from Bennett trade, 2nd in 2024 & few mid/late round picks. If everything goes great, Buffalo get players to drop in lineup now (1 young defenseman & top 6 C), 2 1sts, 2 seconds (equal to another 1st).

That’s awful for the Sabres. They potentially and most likely get no firsts? Wow that’s terrible. Retention probably costs a first. 2.5 million for 5 years isn’t cheap
