i think its fair for both sides.... ovi is the greatest goal scorer to ever play and his goals are down bc caps powerplay is struggling other than that hes the same old ovi......not asking a ton tho bc of his age

I think you should be able to get more for Ovi, Like a 1st and a second with Mariner but you are way off on the Holtby deal, Edmonton has a starter now but I think the value would maybe be Puljujarvi plus a 2nd.

Can't imagine the Leafs trading for player 12 years old making 9m a year more. Scoring points this year. Ovi 55 points, Marner 50 points. Leafs are in top 3 in PP. Does Ovi help the PP that much?

And the premise that the Caps make the trade if the Caps don't win the Cup. If true Ovi 12 Cup tries, zero Cups, Marner 1 Cup try, zero Cups. The team that might like Ovi is San Jose especially if one or both Thornton and Marleau depart.

The Holtby trade is interesting. The fit isn't right since Edmonton already has Talbot locked up long term, but I'll just talk about value. Puljujarvi is going to be a top line winger in the NHL in a few years. Is him, a first, and two seconds worth the best goalie in the world? And how do we know that part of why Holtby is thriving is because he has an excellent defensive team in front of him? How different would it be if he was on a team that doesn't have as strong a defensive structure? I don't think it would be too different, but it's still something that has to be taken into account.

The Ovechkin trade is awful for the Leafs. These second round picks don't really do too much for the Caps, so it's basically Ovechkin for Marner + a little extra. Marner is already a stud right now, and is only going to grow into probably a 90 point player. Given that the Leafs could have potentially 7 or 8 years of monster production for a few years of monster goal scoring (given that the Leafs handle Ovechkin right), it's a horrible trade for them.

A couple of side notes - Caps can't trade a first in 2017 since it was already moved in the Shattenkirk trade. Also Samsonov won't be coming over from the KHL next year, and he certainly isn't ready for the starting job, nor is Vanecek.

I wouldn't really expect the Leafs trading for a 12-year-old either.

    cheers

That would be a highway robbery by the Jets and it's not even close.
