I just posted about that player on Montreal Canadiens forum section

    Quote:

He could be the 1 million dollar player the Habs pick to optimize their LTIR. He could fight for a role on 4th line too with Paquette injured and Poehling struggling.

According to Arpon, "On Friday morning, according to a source, the Canadiens got their answer from the NHL. They will be able to put Price on LTIR"

If Bergevin goes for Price on LTIR, he adds : "In an ideal world, the Canadiens would sign or trade for a player at $1.125 million, which is the most a team is allowed to bury in the minors this season. That would allow them to get very close to the new upper limit, then loan that player to Laval on Tuesday and replace him with someone cheaper, like Poehling. The Tampa Bay Lightning did this last season when they signed Boo Nieves to a one-year contract for $708,000, which is a weird number.

So basically Bergevin could claim him to 1) actually fight for the 4th C role and 2) to optimize LTIR

Yes. Provided Byron is still expected to miss 10 games/24 days when the season starts.

So add their cap hits to our final roster's total cap hit, then subtract $81.5M and that's our LTIR relief.

Might not be that simple. I can't find the relevant information/rule for Price's situation, only unspecified sources.
I thought he would be designated non-roster (meaning we have to keep his cap hit open for his immediate return), but if he does qualify for LTIR it kind of amounts to the same thing.

When he comes off LTIR, I believe you'd have to "recalculate" (actually recover the remainder of his $10.5M cap hit) in order to be compliant.
So if we go $20M over, we'll have to dump significant salary in order to activate him when he returns (and leaving him on LTIR is not an option). I'm waiting for the final roster before figuring it out.
