I could be way off here, but I feel like the group of people who hate Marner for being "overpaid", are the same folks who wanted to run Kadri out of town when he was suspended in the playoffs, and were the same group of people who bashed Freddie all last year when he wasn't playing well...

Fairy paid Matthews (at the time): $10,000,000

Had Matthews’ contract been less, so would Marner’s.

That being said, the negotiations for the Marner contract should have went better as well.
