The Russell-Riikola swap would make more sense if it was a one-for-one, or just the seventh attached with Russell if needed. The difference between the two is minuscule enough that there isn’t much reason to use picks to try and make it even. While I think Riikola holds a little bit more value than Russell, there’s not much reason for the opposing GM to make the trade in this case if they have to give up picks to make it happen.

Completely overanalyzing a meaningless trade, but just my opinion on how an NHL GM would likely see it. They take the path of least resistance, which in this case is a one-for-one.
