Oilers deadline - input is appreciated

Created by: SupremeBone
Team: 2021-22 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 4, 2021
Published: Nov. 4, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Namestnikov is a useful utility player (great at 5-on-6 and a solid PKer) and Staal can bring a veteran defensive element that the team lost with Larsson's departure.

Sissons solves the team's hole at 3C long term and both Cousins and Grimaldi bring an infusion of skilled utility and pace to a 4th line that could genuinely use it. Kassian had to be included to make the cap work. If that's not enough, remove Grimaldi or Cousins.

The additions are mostly expiring contracts which leaves ~12mil open for Puljujarvi, Yamamoto and depth pieces and the addition of Sissons fits with Holland's narrative of only giving up the 1st for a long term asset (3C fix and clearing Kassian).

- Staal has a NMC and has already stated that his family's stability is more important that chasing a cup. He's not going anywhere.
- We're not wasting our cap retentions on such low amounts.
- Turris is a cap dump and has negative value.
- Pick is a year out and Benson is a C level asset at best, not very intriguing pieces

Namestikov for the late 2nd straight up is about the best you could hope for from Detroit.

Wasn't aware of Staal's NMC; that just about nixes his involvement.

As for Turris' negative value, given it's an expiring deal, it's not negative enough to warrant any steep increase in price. His inclusion is necessary to facilitate a deal. Of course, it's entirely reasonable to suggest it wouldn't be enough, but I don't agree to your premise re: any substantial negative value of expiring contracts in deadline deals. I'm not sure Namo warrants a late-2nd himself; maybe a cond. 3rd that becomes a 2nd given certain playoff parameters are met. If it's just Namo and Turris is involved then no retention would be required.

Do you think the Wings intend to use their cap retention slots in a lot of deals this deadline?

That's the point

The red wings are helping take Turris off their hands

Weaponizing cap ftw

The return for two plugs is already quite generous

Reasonable for EDM to include kyle there

Hm it's just current free agent jason demers is way better than Staal and Benson may not be much worse than nammy and is NHL ready at this point

Also eric staal still available

I'd like to see Benson 2nd packaged for a better guy

Just kinda unsettling that Sissons might decline on that contract even further given the term and him being sneaky old, then he's the new Kassian

Lather rinse repeat

Confused

Reasonable. I'm not sure what value a 2nd can return at the deadline these days and there aren't many clear sellers yet so options are limited. I remember Vegas paid a 2nd for Janmark and that's the deal I used as a gauge for that one as I see Namo and Janmark in a similar light.

Care to elaborate on specifics as to why? I value what I see from Sissons considering his shutdown deployment, the fact that he's young, locked up for term at a solid cap hit, and he's a RC. He's also had his fair share of playoff heroics, as well. He kinda checks every box for me. Getting rid of Kassian is a significant plus for me, too.

Main difference being one's a defensively-responsible RC that has experience faring quite well in a shutdown role while the other is a semi-skilled, physical, mistake-prone RW whose defensive capabilities are very limited. I think Sissons' skillset lends itself to the Oilers' success over the next 2 or 3 years FAR more than Kassian's and that's what matters to me.

I think Turris and the 2nd for Namestikov straight up could work for cap purposes. That is a valid point that Turris is on an expiring deal.

If the Wings are sellers again (which we likely will be), I fully expect them to use their retention on higher salaries. Possibly Greiss, Fabbri (if they don't plan on extending him), and/or Leddy (if they don't plan on extending him).

This is very valid point. Namestnikov for Turris with a second is a good deal. I expect Edmonton's pick to be quite late this year.

Kass has been terrific him and foegele really create an excellent checking line. Ryan is fine for the short term centring that line Holloway once healthy and up to speed could add a ton to that. Outside of the complication of staal having a clause don’t think the Detroit trade really makes the team any better more of a sideways trade just a different look given the team has had success that type of trade just doesn’t seem needed.

Heck no, Both Staal and Namestnikov make $2,000,000 each noway are we retaining $500,000 on each. Yzerman will retain on higher salaries like Leddy before wasting retention on cheap contract. And with his NMC Staal isn't waiving a late 2nd round pick for Namestnikov is fine.
