Description
We need players that can play team defence and defensemen in general. We also need to get some line mates for Matthews.

On defense, we trade JVR, BOZAK and two high picks but get a top four defence of Lindholm, Rielly, Gardiner and Zaitsev. The bottom four would be Carrick, Pulock, Dermott and Foote which would be as full of potential as our forwards. With the expansion draft, Pulock may be expendable especially because it does not appear he is beating out anyone on that core anytime soon.

On forward I said get Matthews teammates and gave him Rychel. But Rychel has been one of the best players in the AHL and would be ideal meat and potatoes guy on the line. Round it out with Bracco and we have the sniper in Matthews, playmaker in bracco, and grinder in Rychel. Next bring up kapenen and put him on the Nylander and Kadri line. Good defensive line that can put up a lot of points as well. Grinder in Kadri who can also snipe, pure sniper in kapenen and elite playmaker in Nylander. Next you acquire Strome who looks more and more expendable with the emergence of Ho Sang and players like Dal Colle looking to make the roster. Putting him on a line with Marner should elevate his game and we also have Leivo who is the grinder on the line with a crazy shot. Last we have a defensive shutdown line Hyman- Gauthier-Brown. All are defensively responsible and can ship in the odd goal. Can be used short handed as well. Extras include soshnikov and Martin in case bracco isn't ready, sub brown with bracco and move up soshnikov.

I know I have sorta underpaid Zaitsev but he is not worth 4 million for 4 years or more. He is in reality a good number 4 defensman, which would cost about 3-3.5 million.

By the deadline next year we should have the projected lineup bellow and possibly Dermott and foote replacing someone on that defense if they really develop fast. I am high on both because Dermott is a shutdown defensemen as is Foote. Foote has incredible size and would instantly upgrade our Defense. By no means is he the next Doughty or Weber, but if he can grow to compliment Rielly or even be shutdown pair with Dermott, we would have a solid D for the next decade

You really think Foote and Bracco are NHL ready next year, and Rychel an NHLer?

Foote is 6' 2 more than 200 pounds. Our depth on Defense shows he is more ready that the plugs playing defense this year. If you read my description I wrote that we can sub in brown in place of bracco til he is ready but I do believe by the deadline he would be. He has played internationally and he is what he is. A small talented player. Last year the same was said for Marner and he was too small. But as we have seen thats not the detrimental factor. Rychel was an NHLer and he still is. I don't know how much you have watched him play but it seems like he didn't sign a jersey for your or something. He has elevated his game and is prototypical power forward. He is better than Hyman on the LW and with the depth the line up has if it doesn't work out, the leafs are deep enough to move someone back up.

It seems as though the islanders are not getting enough and the Ducks are getting too much but I'm all for stabilizing the defense and moving out Bozak and Jvr...

Also...they would keep dermott developing playing big minutes with the Marlies and Foote would probably need another year in junior and a year in the ahl according to the scouts.

JDP I felt that too but keep in mind Lindholm is signed for 5 years and the islanders essentially would lose either one of those players to expansion. I agree with the playing big minutes n the marlins but I think you try and get Dermott pairing with Foote in the AHL and those are your call ups throughout the season and then put em in full time depending on how they develop by deadline.

David I thought so too but some ruling last summer said he had to protected. Essentially it was because he played a certain amount of Ahl games before his 20th birthday. His was an odd case but I think might as well just capitalize on it

Foote cannot Play in the Ahl otherwise that might be a good scenario. It's the NHL or back to the whl for him. Unless young players are playing they won't keep them with the Leafs. Corrado was only ever sitting around because he was older and required waivers.

Gee shab101. You called me out for not thinking that Rychel will be a significant NHLer. But somehow you don't know CBA as indicated by JDP. Seems highly unlikely that the Leafs could draft a guy about 12th overall and he he would be ready for the NHL. Yes, I have seen Rychel play....have you? And while he has progressed this year, I really have doubts that he can be significant NHL contributor due to his skating.
