Big Changes

Created by: dilldoughs
Team: 2021-22 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 10, 2021
Published: Dec. 10, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Who adds in the NYI trade? Varlamov is historically the superior goalie, but Barrie is the superior defenseman and would improve NYI's struggling PP. Edmonton takes Hickey to help make the cap work.

Chiarot is definitely not my first choice, but I would love Toffoli on this team, and think this is a way to get both. Best bet for an Oilers LD this year is a rental anyways, as they have Broberg, Niemelainen and Samorukov all pushing for a spot next year.

Swap two young-ish but struggling RFA wingers in Benson/Appleton with hopes that a change of scenery benefits both.

Larsson as a depth LW/C and PKer.

Barrie isn’t great defensively, so I’m not sure he fits Trotz’s system but I would take it. Maybe take out Hickey and EDM retains like 500k to 1M on Barrie

Retention would make it hard for Edmonton to make things work for next year's cap, so the Hickey swap would be the preference since it's just for this year. Fair point about the Barrie/Trotz connection, but as a sheltered 3rd-pair PP specialist he could work for them. If Trotz is still there next year..

Two 1sts, a 2nd and Lavoie for Toffoli and 20 games of Chariot? People would be protesting for Holland to lose his job if that ever happened.

I like Appleton though

As if some people aren't already doing that.. To me though, Toffoli helps this team for the next few years on a fair contract, and Chiarot (ideally) helps solidify the LD for a push this season as a rental, then one of Broberg/Samorukov/Niemelainen replaces him next year. This also gets Edmonton out of Kassians' contract. Personally think Edmonton is in a position to trade some futures for guaranteed roster players that can help today, but to each his own.

Even 500k? If not I guess Hickey works too. I just don’t want to pay 4.5M for a 3rd pair defenseman

I would like to see the Oilers make some additions this year, but stepping back and looking at the value on that deal, its pretty bad for the Oilers. Toffoli is like a 35-50 point guy. A middle 6 guy and an average 2nd pairing rental shouldn't cost that much.

Fair enough. I personally think Toffoli would add key depth for Edmonton and would give them one of the best Top 9s out there, and gives them the flexibility to run some really strong combinations. He also PKs well. His term is key, and the price goes up to get rid of Kassian, which I see as being necessary for the team's success. I also see Lavoie as getting passed in the depth chart by guys like Petrov, Bourgault, Savoie, and Tullio, making him a valuable but expendable trade chip. Realistically, their 1st round picks won't be roster players until Draisaital/McDavid's contracts are coming up, so to me they should be used for upgrades today.

I would have to agree on Chiarot though. I'd much rather keep one of the 1st round picks, and trade for someone like Giordano half retained or even Edler if he's willing to move.

Why would Islanders downgrade D and G for a 3rd round pick ? Well documented that Chariot gets you a 1st and probably a 2nd or 3rd already. Lavoie isnt a legit prospect so EDM acquiring Toffoli plus disposing of Kassians contract for a 1st ? Dont see any of those playing out.
