Quoting: MNBassman
It would take Pittsburgh less than a second to pass on this offer!
A potential top-four defenseman, top 50 prospect, whom we acquired from the team in question, and is the better of our only TWO rhs defensive prospects.
A middle-six powerforward. Valued at a late 1st to a mid 2nd. Somewhere in that range.
A 1B type goaltender, who is, and is going to be, cheaper than anyone we could sign to replace him and the best option we have to hold down the fort if Wallstedt isn't ready to play backup once Talbot's contract is up.
A 2nd.
And a 3rd.
All of which for a player who isn't in actuality all that much better than Fiala is. From a overall talent and skillset wise viewpoint. Replace Guentzel with Fiala on Sid's wing and Fiala would put up either the same or better numbers than Guentzel does.
It's an overpay. And a big one at that. I say this with the Penguins being my second favorite team and an avid die-hard fan of them since the 90's. As Mario Lemieux and that Pens era is what got me into hockey when I was a kid. The North Stars had already left, and I was too young when it happened. I turn 36 at the end of the month, for reference.
My point of that little story is two-fold. First is what I wrote above, second is so that you'd believe me when I say, that while I love Jake... and would love to have him on our roster. I wouldn't pay that price for him. That's a lot to give up for a top-six winger whose had a fair number of injury issues of late, who isn't much better than what we already have in Fiala.
If a winger like Guentzel is the goal. Just resign Fiala this off-season and deal with the consequences later, keep the assets and move them for something else. You're wasting assets otherwise.
