The Future of the Oilers

Created by: Eberles_Backcheck
Team: 2023-24 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 6, 2022
Published: Jan. 6, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
About 15M to fill 6 spots:
1G (5M), Top 4D (4M - Trade), 3LW (3M), 3LD (1.5M) , 4C (1M)

Bourgault and Broberg become full time NHLers
Lavoie and Savoie are next to push

Going to try my best to project some extensions:

The Key Signings:

Puljujarvi 4 x 4M - I predict he slows just a bit from his 25 G 59 P pace he's on and finishes with around 20 G 50 P.
Bouchard 3 x 4M - I hope they try to sign him after 21/22. Would be smart. Might cost a lot more if they wait for his RFA year.
Yamamoto 2 x 2.5M - Continues on his current pace and finishes with 15 G 30 P. Signed summer 2022.
McLeod 2 x 1M - Continues to gain confidence and finishes the season strong. No leverage in negotiations however.
Klefbom Retires :(

Secondary Signings

Niemeläinen 2 x 850K - Decent prospect, signed to a cheap contract in 2022 summer
Skinner 2 x 1.5M - Has a decent season as the backup in 22/23 and re-ups for 2 years at a reasonable price
Konovalov 1 x 1.15 - Plays well in the AHL and makes a few appearances in the NHL. I can see a hold out until camp. Eventually takes a 1 year deal.
Lavoie 2 x 850K - Standard deal out of his ELC

Traded

Benson - This is 50/50. I think he gets traded somewhere in the Summer of 2022. Maybe in the Kassian Deal. Could also be resigned for around 900K depending how the rest of the season goes.
Samorukov - Traded with a high pick in Summer 2022 for a Top 4 D or a goalie. Maybe packaged with Barrie.
Lagesson - Probabaly for a late pick

Nuge doesnt play well with mcdavid, i think they will go longer term with puljujarvi, yamamoto would be lucky to get 2 million, Bouchard will have a long term contract closer to 6 million than 4.

Lines can change for sure. With Bouchard, I agree, he could probably get more $ on a longer term right out of the gate. But maybe he takes a bridge and that gives EDM more $ for those 3 years. Then he can sign a monster deal after his bridge.

It's hard to say without knowing who the team giving up the goaltender or top 4 dman that costs under $4 mil is, but if someone has one, why would they take on more salary, Samo (Who is waiver eligible next year), and a 2nd in the following draft? Like, to me, that package doesn't get you much of an upgrade.

    With Kassian, "Meh".

The problem is Bouchard will be playing with mcdavid and drai on the powerplay during his bridge. Edmonton can't afford another darnell nurse situation especially considering darnell will be on the books at that time.

I'm thinking broberg is our top 4 Dman during this time period and somebody like niemeleinen is our bottom guy.

Yea definitely could happen that way. It is impossible to project these things. If that happens, could maybe sign a better RHD to solidify the D, or like you said, go longer term with Bouchard.

I don't think that's a bad option. At least gives you a chance to see where he's at for the first bit of next season. I absolutely think there needs to be changes in Edmonton, but I don't see teams rushing out to give you cheap, top 4 options without getting something major back.

With Samo, I'm willing to bet that he'll be waived at the start of next season. Doesn't mean he doesn't have value, just don't think he's ready to be on an NHL roster.

If the Oilers dont go anywhere in those Bridge years of Bouchard, its tough to imagine Leon and McDavid even stick around. The point of me bridging Bouchard was to leave some extra money to solidify a position somewhere else.

Waive him or trade him. I think Broberg is in the NHL lineup at the start of next season. it's tough to imagine them keeping samo over niemeleinen and they would have to trade Koekkoek to keep him.

He will be traded. Probably as part of a bigger deal
