They need a puck mover. Brannstrom does exactly that. Also, they free themselves of Koskinnen and Turris and gain cap space.

Ottawa is taking on the extra salary dollars and I think Lavoie for Brannstrom is a wash. But the rest is taking advantage of a reeling Oilers team...

Brannstrom is a million times the player Lavoie will ever be. Not even close to a wash.

That said, the trade slants significantly towards Ottawa. The only way it would make any sense for Edmonton is if they desperately needed the cap space to make a different move. Even then, the price would still be too high.

Edmonton could find a better way to spend their 1st. They need to compete now.

Forsberg wouldn't "save them". Tierney is not as good as 2-3 years ago and Brannstrom is 5'10 and only 22 y/o, just breaking in.

Forsberg is worth maybe a 5th?
    Tierney maybe a 5th too?

Melnyk wouldn't accept Turris to come back but for the sake of the discussion, let's say it's realistic. Turris + Koskinen dumps : Edmonton gives up a 2nd

Let's say Lavoie for the 3rd is fair

This leaves Brannstrom (plus Tierney and Forsberg) for a 1st and a 2nd. He's not worth that at the moment

A 1st, a 5th for Brannstrom, Forsberg and Tierney would be more fair but it wouldn't help Edmonton that much NOW

I live in Montreal so easy to follow the Q closely here. I'd be pretty upset if Dorion was trading Brannstrom for Lavoie.
