i have Hutton who's a 1/2 LHD, and Hamonic who is better than a 3/4 RHD.

Hutton is not convincing enough as a 1/2 yet (not saying he won't eventually be). Even combined it's still a significant offensive drop.
One of those D would have to produce at least 50% of what Karlsson does.

So would you do Hutton+1st+Phaneuf (50% retained)?

I'm anti-Phaneuf and not interested in a pick in a Karlsson trade. Neither of those D has at least 50% of the offensive output of Karlsson either.
You'd probably have to pick up a different D man or do a 3-way to get me what I want.

okay, so what d-man would i have to pick up? Top pairing or 2nd pairing? LHD or RHD? I would also take MacDonald as part of the deal if you count him as having negative value.

Josi and Hedman are probably tops on my list for #1 LD. Hedman's probably a little inflated in value right now due to his production last season though.
I don't really have a #3/4 in mind for RD, but I can be more flexible there or consider forward upgrades instead.

MacDonald I'm okay with. I don't need any big salary relief.
The only thing I'd like to do is move Brouwer, as Frolik will eventually make him redundant, but while a little overpaid, Brouwer is not negative value to me.

I'm not sure. I've done some looking around and I can determine some reasons it could be considered a wise move in the future, but they seem like a stretch to me at this point in time. I can only assume he knows what he's doing and hope it works out for both teams.

I don't think I will still exist in the year 20158, but I'd consider it for a 2018 if I end up with one more 3rd round pick in my possession.

Wait, so by a top 2 defenseman do you mean any top 2 defenseman or a superstar? Because my best d-man is Hamonic who isn't as good as Hedman or Josi and is a right handed shot. So if it works for you i could put together a package of Ben Hutton (i consider him a top pairing defenseman. Not saying i'm right and you're wrong but just so you know i watch the Canucks a lot, though it's fine if you aren't interested. They're one of the teams i see the most), Michael Sgarbossa (Played good in Florida, and could become a top 6 forward, though it's unknown if he will or not), Dion Phaneuf 50% retained (If he has retained salary it's a pretty good pickup. Definitely a top 4 defenseman but his value probably goes down if there is nothing retained), Thomas Greiss (He's a starting goalie. Not one of the best in the league but he's probably good enough for the starting job if you ask me), and a 1st round pick. Not sure if this fills your team needs but it's my offer to start. Tell me if it isn't enough.

I have a lot of pieces. What I'd be looking for is quality. You don't have a defenseman I'd consider in a Karlsson package, which is why I gave you a couple of names.

I mean less pieces with higher performance. A 1st has no performance value. The others aren't bad performers, but you have to combine a bunch of them to equal the performance of Karlsson, which is not the kind of trade I'm interested in.

I looked at your Brouwer/Despres and Wilson/Green offer. The total dollars is the same but I go from $3.9M in recoverable LTIR to $1.475M and Wilson is arguably already a more effective player than Brouwer, let alone the RFA status and albatross of the Brouwer contract. My only risk is if Despres comes off IR.
