Description
Oilers need to make the playoffs this is non-negotiable. A lot of people’s jobs are gonna be on the line and with next to no cap space I don’t expect many moves to be made. I’d like a veteran defenseman but I don’t think we get a top four one - to expensive. I think Oilers still pursue a goalie and I’d like one of Samsonov, Vanecek, etc I don’t think they’re likely options. Fleury I doubt, Varlamov would be steep assuming he’d even want to come to Edmonton. Georgiev is a possibility as is Korpisalo, Holtby maybe as wel but not sure any of them are an upgrade over the current goaltending. I think the Oilers still want Smith to be the starter and are ready to move on from Koskinen so a younger goalie like Korpisalo or Georgiev I think they’d like, same with Samsonov but the goalie market is tough right now. So here’s the trade I came up with let me know what you think. Kane and Holloway are the additions they want for the forwards.

Sharks decline. 2nd is what they paid for Hill. He is signed another year and they are taking back Koskinen a pending ufa. Add a good prospect and maybe.

This trade is atrocious asset management from Edmonton. Trading a 2nd AND retaining to make the salaries almost equal to exchange Koskinen for a goalie with extremely similar below average statistics. The "advantage" is the extra year on the contract but the Oilers already have Smith and Skinner signed next year. You'd be better off keeping your 2nd and playing Skinner more than acquiring Hill.

Hill- 0.901sv% -0.23 GSAA/60
Koskinen- 0.900sv% -029 GSAA/60

The difference between the 2 goalies over a 50 game season based on the 24 they've both played to date is Hill saving you an extra 3 goals for that 2nd round pick.

I should explain I don’t want Hill, personally I wanted Wallstedt but now I would target Samsonov or wait till the off-season and kick tires on Kuemper and Jarry. But I think Oilers will make a move and while I think Jones or Holtby make more sense I think Ken wants a younger goalie like Hill or Georgiev or Korpisalo or Vanecek, but we need a starting young goalie and I’m not sold on any of them. Also you would need to give up the second cause that’s what the Sharks gave up, even then might not be enough. Georgiev makes probably the most sense but not sure Rangers will feel rushed to get rid of their backup unless he forces their hand.

If you're Ken Holland, you have to take a run at a real starter (even though the cap situation makes it real difficult). Bringing in a Hill/Samsonov/Vanacek/Georgiev/Korpisalo just brings us back into the gamble of hoping running with a Smith/Koskinen tandem won't sewer the season. The really missed their opportunity 2 years ago when they let Calgary outbid them on Markstrom. A starting UFA goalie at the right age and willing to sign in Edmonton doesn't come around very often.
