Not worth it for sabres without a Monahan extension in place

See, I think that's the thing. We wouldn't be extending him. Do you think Casey mittelstadt has done anything in his career to indicate that he realistically is more than a middle 6 winger?- I don't, save for about 20 games at the end of last season where he was on a 50 point pace. So why would Calgary be adding a first to monahan?- its because Monahans play and value are sinking like a stone. He's not a player we need.

I don't think Monahan extends unless he has a major bounce back and even if he I would only give him 3 to 4 yrs at most. He adds a veteran center man presence to lighten the load on the young guys and a high pick is provided for helping Calgary retain Gaudreau and Tkachuk. If he is not likely to resign you can move him at the deadline with 50% retained and get back at least a 2nd or a b level prospect
