are we any better in 2 years than we are today

Description
Hard to predict the contracts and player development. But doing this to see what path we are on and whether we are any better in 2 years at the current pace. Seems like we are on track to be a perennial "meh" team barring a big move.

Top 6 - About the same. Expect a slow decline for Joey/Duchy/Granny (especially Duchene after this year). Fil is probably still producing. I really believe Tomasino will be a solid 2nd line winger. Hopefully Tolvy pans out as a 2nd line winger as well but I doubt it.

Bottom 6 - Maybe a little better? If Glass pans I could see him replacing Joey at 2C and bumping Joey down, but thats a big IF. Parssinen has looked like a stud and I think he's the future 3C of the Preds. Kunin is a question mark. I think either Tolvy or Afanasyev becomes a 3rd line scoring winger, but the other one gets dealt. You can put Sissons anywhere.

Top 4 - About the same? Age catches up with Josi/Ekholm but Fabbro/Carrier cement themselves as top 4 D. We move on from one of Fabbro/Carrier/Myers and as of right now it looks like Myers, but that could change. I bet Poile goes for a long deal at low AAV for either Fabbro or Carrier (similar to what Josi had).

Goaltending - same but with a better backup

Other prospects - maybe Evangelista or L'Heureux develops quicker than expected. Askarov and Svechkov are probably playing in Milwaukee in 2 years getting adjusted to NA ice?

I feel like this team is just consistently stuck as slightly above average. That means they always have a shot at the playoffs, but typically get knocked out early-- resulting in them rarely getting a top 10 draft pick, let alone a top 5. There are still good players in the later picks of the 1st round, but our scouts haven't been great at finding that elite talent in the 1st round. This lineup just looks like more of the same. I still like this team on paper, but they need 1-2 more forwards that can consistently put up 65+ points. Can Evangelista turn into that player? Can Tolvanen become that 30-30 player? Can Glass become a 2C? I just don't know if I see a player in the Preds system that I can confidently project will be a productive top 6 forward in the future.

So do you think we should do something to change it? Do we try to add pieces before the current core is out of their prime? I hate the idea of giving away picks/prospects, but this team has too many good players to go through a rebuild. I guess we will just hope that 1-2 prospects turn into stars. And if they don't then we just bathe in mediocrity.

It all depends on how some of our prospects turn out.

Tolvanen is kind of regressing
Kunin looks good
Tomasino is having a good year especially when you consider how little time he’s been given on ice
Jeannot is a beast
Trenin is moving along

Other then them its a lot more guesswork.
Evangelista, afanasyev, L’Heureux, and Svechkov look like they could turn into top 6 players. Del Gaizo, Farrance, Ufko are interesting dmen that could pan out. Saros is still young and should have several years infront of him but Askarov still looks like the future. A lot of questions, I still wonder if signing Forsberg long term is the right answer but I don’t want to trade him unless he will not extend.

I wonder if NSH would be able to unload the Johansen contract onto a team like ARI. They need to reach the cap floor and could use a big contract like that. I can't see ARI being attractive to FA's this year knowing they'll be playing in a 5000-seat college stadium...

That would free up some money to go after a FA or provide some additional assets to use in a trade to bring in a more consistent top 6 forward. Although, I do think Johansen brings a lot to this team in terms of leadership-- I just wish he was $2m cheaper. He's on pace to have a 50+ point season which is a good bounce-back for him though. Can he keep that up throughout the remainder of his contract or does the Johansen of the prior two seasons return?

Other than that, I just don't see how NSH can add that much next year. They also have to think about the upcoming contracts of Jeannot, Fabbro, and Carrier in 2023-- each of whom could potentially command $4m+.

And you have to consider how the lack of gate revenue last season impacted the team. That's a big reason they didn't spend as much as they could this season-- does that continue next year?

Have to disagree with Eeli regressing. Agreeing with all the other assessments. Yes, his goals and assist numbers aren't what we expected but every other area of his game is up hits, defense, possession numbers and etc. I think he just isn't getting the puck luck and it's got his confidence down a bit. As long as he keeps firing he will be fine.

In other terms, Preds do a fantastic job at making players be well rounded in their game and you can see that in players that have gone through the system. I think they have done a good job of late drafting players that can be top 6 forwards compared to prior years. Just gotta hope one of these guys turns into gold.

As great as Forsberg has been they should trade him. Will limit the future for spending and team would probably still be that same bubble playoff team without him. Poile usual does the opposite of anything I suggest though, so he's probably a lock to stay.
