Oilers offseason

Created by: Hii
Team: 2022-23 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 11, 2022
Published: Mar. 11, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The first stipulation is that we will say that Tyson Barrie returns to the form of an elite offensive defenceman for the Oilers on their first pairing. If not for that stipulation in place I would probably try and find a taker for Tyson Barrie because there will always be a market for a RD no matter how expensive or bad, especially one that has a decent history like Barrie. We will say that Mike Smith retires due to injury or age at the end of the season once he see's that the Oilers are not going anywhere. The taxi squad are callups that probably start in the minors and move up to fill injury holes.

- Let me explain my logic for signing Frk, he is a top six scorer, if you put him in the top six he will score and that is a great thing for Edmonton because I don't see Kane resigning with them and their cap problems would make this really tough considering that he will ask for quite a bit, Frk is a cheap solution that is also a veteran and if he does not work you can bury him free of charge and put someone else on the top line, I think that he would be a great shooter for McDavids playmaking.

-Spencer Martin is goaltending depth incase one of the goaltenders get injured, I think that with Vancouver this year that he has proven that he is a capable fill in.

- Jan Rutta is an excellant support defenceman and I would be kinda supprised if he walked from Tampa but if he did he would be a great replacement for Keith on a cheaper cap hit and would be excellant in support of Nurse, Barrie, or Bouchard. He is a great player that is super underated.

Additional Details:
Anaheim fans may be bad because this includes Duncan Keith, I don't see that as a problem, I think that for a year where you're might not be competitive or you may not he isn't a big worry, he will provide solid defence and will be a great mentor, and if you're GM Pat Veerbek thinks that his team is midway through a rebuild that may push Gibson away more, I think that his numbers will bounce back under a contender with an okay defencive core. Keith is also their to help the cap but he can provide a mentorship role and be flipped at the deadline for future assets.

What else, I'm expecting a hoard of angry Anaheim fans but it does make sense if Verbeek feels that he is still in the middle of the rebuild, you could add Carter Savoie and it would be close, and TBH, Gibson hasn't been outstanding these last couple of years, he's fallen off a cliff for the past little bit after the All Star Weekend so I think that it's close.

You would need to add Skinner to the deal to give Anaheim a young goaltender, and add some great young players to the deal like Holloway, Bouchard, or Broberg for Anaheim to even consider that.

Coming from an oilers fan, Not even close for Gibson. The chance of him being moved is getting smaller than it was at the start of the season. I used to think it made sense for them to move him, as his prime years didn’t align with Anaheim’s timeline of competing. But with the emergence of Terry, Zegras, Drysdale etc I think their window is closer than I thought initially. With a few good offseasons and signings, they could be a playoff team shortly.

If the oilers were to put together a package, it would be something along the lines of:
1st, 2nd, Skinner, Broberg + some cap to even up the money.

That’s a very steep price to pay, but the aside from Skinner, the oilers don’t have a goalie in the system who’ll be nhl ready in the next 2 years. There aren’t any UFAs that a long term fixes, and the trade market as of right now is at best a lateral move from what they have now.

If there’s a chance a Gibson or Hart are available, the oilers should move nearly anything to get it done, but I don’t like Holland’s creativity to actually swing a big deal so it’s a moot point

Petrov and Savoie both of who are doing amazing in their respective leagues, you could also add Tullio, that's probably the value for Gibson, I know that each player has a price and some players are worth more than others but any deal that sends Holloway, Broberg, Bouchard, others should send the GM out of town, those players are not for sale, Gibson may request a trade this offseason if his team does not reach the playoffs. But there is no way in the world that the ducks would be getting Bouchard, Broberg, Holloway or others, that's just unreasonable. I get that he was an All star this year but lately has been very bad and over the last three years he has had a save percentage below the league average of 910%. I believe if you added maybe Lavoie or Tullio that this deal would be considered very heartily by the Anaheim Ducks front office. I'm now curious to see what Oilers fans think.......

BTW this was just a proxy to see what an offseason deal could look like along with the rest of the offseason, I truely think though that this is around the value for Gibson, what Chrychrun gets will be less than what Gibson gets so I think that we have to keep that in mind.
