Monahan

Created by: gary_bettman
Team: 2021-22 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 18, 2022
Published: Mar. 18, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Why?
Labanc needs a change of scenery. Bonino hasn't fit in in SJ and Chmelevski has been knocked down the depth chart by Robins and Bordeleau. Monahan has one more year left and has been relegated to 4th line duties. If he doesn't turn it around in SJ we just let him walk. Dube has also been on the 4th line in Calgary and still has the ability to become a decent middle six option.

Calgary gets rid of Monahan, adds a strong middle six piece with good offensive upside, a great PKer in Bonino and Chmelevski is still a good prospect.

This really doesn't help Calgary's upcoming cap crunch

Honestly I'd expect more of a return for taking on Monahan. The guy is brutal and makes almost 6.5 million. For a team that needs cap space to sign a star player it would need to be more. And they get 2 good roster players out of this. If I were Calgary I'd easily take this

Monahan has one more year and Timo isn't due his next contract until next offseason. If he returns to form in SJ it would pay dividends for the Sharks. He's still young.

I love your username btw. An ode to the legend Daniel Winnik.

Do they sign or trade Timo? I'm not sure what the sharks want. They are in the not playoff/not bottom 5 so they don't get good prospects nor win the cup. They definitely should have dealt hertl imo. I get wanting to try and compete as they have some still good, but aging players combined with the weak division, but the rebuild should happen.

And yes.. Olympic team Canada LEGEND.... Daniel Winnik

sharks can’t risk taking on reclamation projects this expensive, and Labanc is just as much a cap dump reclamation project. neither team will be doing this deal, i could see Monahan to Arizona and a 1st for a 3rd

Sharks made it very clear what they want by signing Hertl. They said they want to push forward and compete next year. Then they said Timo is a huge piece of the core.

Sharks can't afford to rebuild. Attendance is already way down, we don't have the benefit large market teams to just tear it down and expect fans to keep coming. Sharks are way to skittish to enter a rebuild.

They hope the arrival of Eklund and Bordeleau can catapult the team in the coming two years.
