Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only way Kovalchuk can play for a team OTHER than New Jersey, each GM would have to sign off on him returning to the NHL.

    I don't think that's going to happen.

New Jersey can trade his rights to another team, and they would be able to sign him without approval from all of the other GMs, which is what he/she did here. The only reason Kovy would need all of the GMs approval for his return is if he wants to become a true UFA and sign with whoever he wants, which yeah, I'd say is fairly unlikely to happen.

Actually according Pat Iverson of SB Nation Kovalchuk's old contract would remain intact since he "retired" early. The team he gets moved to (or New Jersey) has to absorb his $6.667 mil cap hit until 2024.

I don't think this is the case at all. Bob MacKenzie mentioned something on twitter yesterday about this. I believe he needs to re-negotiate a contract. that other contract was void I think.

That could be. I've seen both, and Friedman thinks he'd have to sign a new deal as well. It seems to be a question mark at this point since no one ever "retired" with such a lengthy contract before. I wonder if his recapture penalty would apply to a team he gets traded to?

When he retired, his contract became null and void. That's been 100% confirmed. If he comes back, he'll need to sign a new deal. And to elaborate on that, he'll need to sign that contract with NJ and then be traded elsewhere. You can't trade the rights of retired players.

    Kovy's rights belong to us.
We can sign and trade him, so a deal with team accepting gets involved.
Otherwise if he wants to come back without Devs all teams have to agree, which will not happen.
The following year he is free to do what he wants, but he will be 35 and then has implictaions also

Will be a sign and trade if anything

They would be smart to sign and trade. Might as well gather assets from a guy who you have no use for. I just hope there isn't teams out there that will say no simply because they know they'll have no chance of getting him
