Team: 2022-23 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 17, 2022
Published: Apr. 17, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Oilers gain the ability to go 3.4 mil over the cap if Keith retires(for a guy who is turning 39 in the summer I think it’s time to hang up the skates along with Mike smith who seems to get injured atleast once a month)

Trade Breakdown:

Flyers get a solid middle 6 forward for their re-tool oilers get a mid round pick this year

Barrie is a great Offensive Defence-man that lacks on the defensive side the oilers already have this in Bouchard while Seattle could look to get a solid PP QB with term the oilers get a middle pairing defence man who’s a UFA next year and a mid round pick next year in return I’ve seen a lot of people putting Barrie for a this years 2nd plus so I think this return is fair

Scott Mayfield is a bottom pair shutdown guy. I’ve seen a lot of Oilers fans on here getting him and a 2nd for Yamo so I believe a high 3rd next year should do the trick for a UFA next year

Oilers need a solid 1A this season Reimer should do the trick at a solid price point. Lavoie doesn’t seem like he’ll find a place on the oilers with all the prospects we have but he’ll be a solid middle 6 forward in the future that coupled with a 3rd gets it done

Kubalik hasn’t been amazing this season making this trade value low but a season on Mcdavids wing could make him into what Kane is now for the oilers but at a younger age, price point, and without all the off the ice risk that bringing back Kane would bring

RFA signings:
Puljuljarvi and Yamo get long term deals so that you don’t have to bend your cap in the future to fit them in as there already there
McLeod gets a solid pay day for a 4th line center for the future
Kubalik signs a deal similar term to what Kane would have got minus 1.25 mil AVA due to production

UFA’s:
Doesn’t need to be Johan Larson and Collin Blackwell but some solid 3rd/4th liners for under 2 mil on a 1-2 year deal (similar to Derrick Ryan’s contract) other players considered in this conversation (Dominik Simon,ZAR,Rocco Grimaldi,Zach Sanford,Micheal Raffl,Mat Perreault,Kevin Rooney,Tyler Motte,Darren Helm,Curtis Lazar,Nico Strum,Nick cousins)

Sign a extra goalie for 1-2 mil for 1 year to challenge Stuart Skinner for the 1B role for this I signed Casey Desmith

Finally Sign a middle six forward for 2-4.5 mil on a 1-3 year deal to compete with Yamo for 2nd/3rd line. Guys who could fit this spot would be (Mattias Janmark,Calle Jarnkrok,Evander Kane,Ilya Mikheyev,Nino Niederreiter,Ondrej Palat,Riley Smith,Richard Rakell,Alex Radulov,Alex Barbanov)

Deadline:
This off-season still leaves the oilers with plenty of money for the deadline/ if I undervalued some players contracts
This team seems like it’s ready to compete now while also keeping the cap space open and prospect pool strong. Obviously this off-season hinges on Keith’s retirement but with Keith gone the oilers are ready to go

maybe at the deadline if they really couldn't get anything better and were out of it? but with the prices for guys like manson, chiarot and savard i'd think a second is the floor

Mayfield is easily worth a 1st round pick. That doesn't come close. Look at what David Savard and Ben Chiarot have been traded for
