Giving up a 1st and getting a 3rd in return isn't close to just giving up a 2nd lol it doesn't work like that outside of NHL 22

Colorado isn't giving up a 1st to move Erik Johnson, And besides zero chance he'd waive for Buffalo anyways.

Cap dump does not mean, that player is useless. He is traded because there is no room for him.
Most likely Washington have to get rid of that contract, in order to gain flexibility to sign other players.

Bare in mind, that there will be plenty of 100 pts teams that need to shed some contracts, and Sabres have not intention to help them out of kindness.
