Description
THE SIGNINGS
-Nichushkin gets 5x$5.5M. He's a top 6 player on this team - he adds his finishing ability to an already sound defensive game and fits incredibly well in this Islanders' system.

-Dobson gets a bridge. Not ideal, but give him a decent AAV for 2 years and hopefully he notices all that cap room hiding out in the 2024 offseason. You'll pay more than you want for him then, but it's the price of doing business if you want to also upgrade the current team.

-Kept all the pending RFAs at $750-900K and stuck most of them in Bridgeport. Bellows & Salo make the NHL squad as depth players. Also re-signed Grant Hutton & Ken Appleby for more depth - Hutton has looked okay in his cup of coffee and Appleby has (extremely limited) NHL experience as a 3rd goalie in the system.

THE TRADES

-Tried to find a home for Josh Bailey. Dallas is tight against the cap and is presumably moving on from Alex Radulov this summer, and they need a top 6 wing this summer. I don't think you'll get a 0.5-6/PPG player for 2x$3.5M in UFA, and all Dallas throws back is a lottery ticket prospect and a 5th. I picked Damiani because he has decent AHL numbers but isn't considered a slam-dunk prospect, but not necessarily married to him as the return.

-Soucy is a great target for the Islanders, and I think this gives decent value back to Seattle for a pending UFA. A 3rd rounder, a Wilde-card prospect (get it? GET IT?), and a solid roster player on a very cheap contract. They can give Panik some run in the first half and flip him out at the deadline for a good return since Detroit is already eating half his contract. Again, think there's wiggle room in this package, but feel like it doesn't have to be tweaked TOO much to make it work.

-GOALIE TRADE! This is the new trade making the rounds here on ACGM - Vegas moving on from Lehner's 3x$5M to try and stabilize their goalie situation. I feel like Lehner wouldn't have the Islanders on his NTC, so no worry there. Both goalies are putting up similar numbers this year so the difference to me comes in the contract and the age. Lehner has the advantage in age but the worse contract, so Vegas would kick in a little sweetener to the Isles for taking those 2 extra years off their hands. I threw in an extra little treat because the Isles would have enough room to retain a little on Varlamov's single year, and we all know that Vegas is searching for any cap space they can.

Let me know how ~terrible~ you think this is~

I'd rather not take Bailey and approach Nichushkin (or UFA equal to that) myself.

no! he's ours!!!

but seriously Dallas is interesting to me this summer, mainly because of Klingberg - what they decide to do with that situation will really point the ship on their summer plans. If they go ahead and re-sign him for what he's probably worth (I'd say around the $7M AAV range is fair for him), I think they have to set their sights a little lower on the rest of the roster, which is where this kind of trade would come in. Bailey's still a decent scorer (40 points in 71 games this season on a bad offensive team) so I feel like he has 55 point potential skating with Dallas' top 6 - and I don't think you can usually get that kinda guy for 2x$3.5M in free agency. I definitely get the idea of feeling like you're just settling for him instead of getting a guy that you're stoked about.

Klingberg's situation is pretty simple but unfortunate - he wants more than we can afford to give. As much as it hurts, he's going to leave.

But replacing him isn't the main issue in Dallas. It's about solving the secondary scoring problem.

Robertson-Hintz-Pavelski line has scored a whopping 45% of all of our goals. That amount is f*cking insane, considering that line only costs us below $12M dollars for now (which is about to change with Robertson's ELC expiring). But we seriously need to spend on an offensive 2nd line winger to play with Seguin and Gurianov/Johnston. Ideally I'd want Burakovsky to that role, and I hope he'd take 6x6 deal. That'd mean we have a limited amount left we can spend on a 2nd pair RHD to replace Klingberg. I hope Stars trade for Shattenkirk - he'd bring some of the offense back Klingberg walking would erase, and his contract is affordable. Ducks fans are saying that they'd happily trade him for Faksa+1st round pick, which is a price I'd be willing to pay because Faksa sucks and getting rid of that $3,25M contract is very valuable for us. Sean Walker is also a decent option for us.

However as it stands Dallas is just as bad offensively as the Islanders are, so Bailey's numbers are not really likely to increase there. Plus his advanced stats are just bad - he doesn't hold much value.

As for Nichushkin, frankly I think he's not coming to Dallas, partly because we bought him out not very long ago lol. I don't think he's hurrying back here. But regardless I'd go after a UFA of his caliber.

The only problem is that the following season we're in cap hell and have to unload players just to re-sign the likes of Wahlstrom and Barzal.

I don't think it's as terrible as you might think. The team has $15.3M in cap space that offseason, and the players from this lineup that you'd have needing contracts after 2022-23 would be:

Barzal: making $7M in 2022-23, probably resigns for $10M AAV (+$3M, $12.3M left)
Wahlstrom: on his ELC at $894K, can bridge for ~$3-4M depending on how he plays next year (take the high projection and +$3.1M, $9.2M left)
Parise: $750K, bottom 6. Either resigns for a similar amount or you bring up one of your guys from Bridgeport to take his spot (no change, $9.2M left)

Carson Soucy: making $2.75M. Maybe re-sign him to 4x$4.5M? I'd budget a number in that ballpark for him or his replacement (+$4.5M, $4.7M left)
Scott Mayfield: the hardest replacement. He's RD3, so maybe you just bite the bullet and get a veteran UFA for cheap (+$1.5M, $3.2M left)

I've got Johnston & Bellows already signed for 2023-24 as your 13th & 14th forwards, and you shouldn't be paying your 7th D more than $1M, whether it's Hutton, Bolduc, Weatherspoon, or whoever.

That leaves about $2.2M under the 2023-24 cap with everyone signed - plenty of room to maybe go bigger on LD2 and bring a guy in for $5-6M if you want, or if Wahlstrom has a huge season you have room to give him the deal he wants. If you don't use it there, then you have some good space for the TDL if you want to upgrade anywhere else as well.

You have $5,000 left on the cap and almost no expires that you're not keeping:
Barzal - stay
Wahlstrom - stay
Parise - gone
Soucy - stay
Mayfield - stay
That $15 mil you have is with these guys completely removed from the cap, so Barzal's $10 mil leaves only $5 mil left.

Bad math on my part. I still think it's doable with that - you might have to sacrifice one of Beau or Palmieri, but if Wahlstrom progresses the way you hope he does, one of those guys is already knocked down to the 3rd line so it's not the end of the world to move them.

I've been done with Beau for some time now. He'd be easier to move and would still bring back at least a decent draft pick too. I'm all for it.
