Because based on that shot alone, he still has a lot of goals left in him. If its so simple, why are you willing to pay him 5 million a year? The Devils hold all the cards this year as far as his return. His path back to the NHL goes through them. I do think the Isles are good destination for him. But it wont come for a 2nd rounder, especially when you consider the number of teams who might be interested, in addition to the Devils ability to retain half his salary after they sign and trade him, or absorb a junk contract to facilitate. I aint saying they get the world for him for the very reasons you state. He wont be quite the guy he was when he left. But it wont be nothing either.

I dont think he'll get a lot because he basically already released a short list and the only teams that are pretty much viable destinations for him are florida and the isles. I cant see them getting into a bidding war for him. I also dont see him staying on the devils as he kinda made it clear he wants to go to the city or florida so it would be a waste to get absolutely nothing for him when they would more than likely get 2 offers.

For starters, the Bolts got more than that with a guy who straight up came out and said he would only play for the Rags. Unverified reports state he wants to stay in one metropolitan area, or one state. Not quite the same.

The Devils still hold all the cards here if he wants to play in the NHL next year. If the return is merely a 2nd, I would simply sign him to a one year deal and move him at the deadline for likely better. If not he can stay in Siberia another year until he is a UFA. I dont think that is what he is going for right now. A guy in his position isnt really in a place to dictate the terms of his return. I do believe he and Ray Shero work together to find a fit, and I do think that the Isles are a good location for him to go. I just dont believe a pittance gets you that much scoring help.

I don't think the devils hold the cards at all honestly. It would be dumb for them to not deal Kovy rather than him wait the extra year and sign wherever he pleases. The Devils essentially have zero leverage in this sense
