Is Hextall Gone

Created by: pensfan21
Team: 2021-22 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: May 16, 2022
Published: May 16, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Serious question: Everyone discussing whether the core will be back or Sullivan, but I am also wondering whether Hextall himself will be back. I think he has done a poor job so far personally. Last summer he got rid of Mccann and Tanev for McGinn and Heinen and he basically said he thinks McGinn is a better version of Tanev for cheaper. That is not true at all. Tanev brought way more energy every night and we saw him step up in big moments and in the playoffs last year. We also lost Mccann for nothing, which I thought was the right move at the time, but turns out it wasn't. He also signed a ton of players that are all the same basically: Rodrigues, Simon, Heinen, McGinn who have all been up and down, but they are all the same type of player. No variety in the lineup. After losing in the first round last year idk why they brought back a slightly worse team and expected a better result. It seems as if they are in between a rebuild and contending, but cannot decide. Also the Carter extension was inexcusable, just makes no sense at all. IMO might be time to move on

PIT fans shouldn't be upset about that series loss. They dominated NYR. Let me telll you as a Caps fan who has lost to both NYR and PIT after dominating them in series, sometimes **** doesn't go your way. That's hockey.

We had a 2 goal lead in Game's 5 and 6 and a one goal lead with 5 min left in Game 7. There is no excuse. We played well this series, with a lot of heart, but we still blew a 3-1 lead.

Sullivan didn't like Tanev so what McGinn is or isn't is not relevant. This goes across the entire roster.

Rutherford left under very odd circumstances. Hextall/Burke have not done much to date, and certainly not what was expected when they were hired. I do not think that the GM position is actually in control in Pittsburgh.

Why did Sullivan not like Tanev, I haven't heard of that. Reports coming out this morning that Hextall could be gone and that Burke is already gonna be gone.

I can see them leaving like Rutherford did. It stinks when your hands are tied and you are not allowed to do what you want, but you get the blame anyway.

Because you lost your best player and your starting goalie. If just 1 of them didn't get hurt that series ends sooner.

I don't think their hands were really tied that bad, yeah we had some bad contracts and not a lot of cap, but thats when you have to get creative. Burke said they wanted to bring more physicality and they brought none. The Carter extension was atrociously bad. Let go of Mccann and Tanev for nothing.

Yeah I agree, bu we had 3 chances to close it out with leads and we blew all of them. Need to look at the bigger picture, our core is ageing and our GM has not been good at all so far. This is a great chance to completely retool the roster.

I am talking about them being tied as in them not being permitted to make moves that they want to make.

"Burke said they wanted to bring more physicality and they brought none." Exactly. They wanted to make moves, do remake the team, and they were not permitted to.

They moved McCann for contract reasons and Tanev was the expansion pick, he was not lost for nothing. They opened $6M cap space and made Sullivan happy.

I don't know I feel its a bit harsh on Hextall. Rutherford left with this team no assets and some bad contracts. McCann sure in hindsight looks worse but I think McGinn is solid and Heinen was a good pick up for the price. Honestly the only major terrible move was resigning Carter. Cap space has a lot to do with it. We have none so the player poll is very limited in who the pens could have offered. The pens outplayed the Rangers for much of this series. You can't take into account the goaltending situation like that in game one and having to rely on your 3rd stringer (not saying that was the only issue).

They opened up 6 mil in cap space and did nothing with it. It's not just what they've done on the Pens, I don't like how he built the Flyers. He is way too patient, and I don't think has the right mindset. And how would you explain the Carter contract, it was inexcusable.

Agreed. I feel like Mario and the other owners were more concerned with keeping the "core" together. But with new owners, maybe they will give Hex and Burke the freedom they need to make the BIG changes Pitt needs.

You are totally missing my point. Hextall is not the one making the actual final decisions.

Who is then? What is there to suggest he isn't? He's the GM he can do what he wants

Only in video games.

He is supposed to be the one making the calls, but as I said above, Rutherford left because he was being told no, and now the Hextall/Burke combo is not doing what was expected nor what is needed. Even Morehouse left at a very odd time. All is not right in the state of Denmark.
