So basically your plan is to run it back with an identical team just swap out Dumo for POJ, and Kapanen for DOC?
I think that would be an awful idea. I understand Kapanen was bad but, man, I do not understand the obsession Pens fans have with DOC. The guy put up 5 points in 22 NHL games. He's a fourth liner at best. And as much as I know Kapanen was disappointing because we all expected him to be top 6 material, he's still going to give you more than 5 in 22 (which is only 18pts over an 82 game span). Kap is good for 30 points a year. I'm not claiming he's a great player or anything but he is definitely better than DOC.
As for POJ taking over for Dumo. I mean sure. That could work. But once again. Is that really a good idea? 'm a big believer in POJ and I think it could work, however if your entire offseason plan involves letting your entire team get one year older and then banking on POJ being good, I dont like it.
I think changes have to be made. Not huge ones. But some. A new top 6 winger. A new bottom 6 guy. A new dman. Stuff like that. Im not saying blow it up but you cant just run it back with an identical team and expect it to work, especially when the only two players you're replacing are being replaced with an average AHL 4th liner, and an unproven young dman.
I also understand than cap is a factor here. I think you have to move out some of your contracts in order to gain more flexibility. I'd be cool with losing dumo and letting POJ take his spot but NOT if thats the only move we make. I think you gotta push to move Zucker, Dumo, and unless he's taking a discount gotta let Rust walk. Just the reality of the situation for the pens this offseason.
