Playoff competitive while building for the future

Created by: Reason
Team: 2022-23 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: May 30, 2022
Published: May 31, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I know Vancouver won’t trade Horvat but trying to be creative with reconfiguring the roster to try and remain competitive (for a playoff position), while also attaining more building blocks for the future. Horvat would have to be willing to extend in Philly.

Why would the Canucks have any reason to trade Horvat?

i was thinking about doing one of these where Vancouver gets PHI picks and trades up to NJs. I bet NJ would consider trading down if Slaf is picked #1.

although if VAN picks 2nd they draft Wright(which they need). One of those two stud RHDs would be there at 5 probably if they went that route anyways

I don't think the Flyers would trade the 5OV for one year of Bo Horvat. Not even sure they would do it even if Horvat had an extension attached. The 5OV is a fall back if the Flyers end up failing again this up coming season and need to blow it up and rebuild.

I agree with that.

I debated not making the trade with NJ and just keeping 5OA in hopes one of the two RD are available.

I mean that’s fair. Horvat would have to come with an extension for Philly to even consider it.

I don't think its enough for Bo anyways. Like to acquire Bo it'd cost 5OA + a similarly aged roster player.

As the description says, I doubt they would be willing to trade him. The reason in my mind would be to improve this team going forward. Hard piece to lose no doubt but good returns don’t happen unless you trade good players.

You must be unfamiliar with the term “negative value”, Google it and come back if you have any questions regarding Poolman.

As for TD, I have nothing against the player, however if Vancouver were able to draft Jiricek and they figure he is NHL ready I don’t see any space for TD if they want to develop Rathbone, who in my opinion has higher upside.

poolman may have a garbage contract, but it doesn't cost one of our top prospects and a third to move him

The only reason Klimovich is one of our top prospects is because our prospect pool is bottom 5 in the league. Poolman is significantly overpaid for the next three years. I’m not even sure if that’s enough to move him.

I mean they did it with a better player when they were in less of a cap pinch with Schmidt.

Ya but you also repeatedly said that about Virtanen and Boeser, both assets that should have been moved at their peak value.

With that said, I do like Horvat but based on where this team is and his age, I think it makes sense to look to the future.

You will notice how well Schmidt panned out after leaving Vegas and they had a replacement lined up before moving Schmidt. Context is improtant.

Besides that point Roy is an RFA where arb gets him maybe 1.5 for a year. Vegas isn't moving that when your contract as a offersheet is a 2nd. Roy is going to sign a short term 1-2 year waiting out big contracts (Patches, Martinez, Marchessault) to prove he deserves more than Stephenson (which he doesn't)

That’s a solid reply. Didn’t realize his Arb would be anywhere near that low, if it is then for sure they should keep him.

Never had any issues with moving Virtanen, if the value was on point and the right trade package came forward. Boeser makes no sense to move, he fits the age bracket that JR is targeting of 26 and under, and his value low and moving him doesn't make sense now. Boeser also enjoys playing in VAN and is close with core group of players.
