Does Fiala really fit

Created by: GSGHARRIS

Description
Not posted for trade talk. Looking for talking points on:
1. Does Fiala fit/would you make that trade. I would. I think his game would be a great partner for Stutzle.
2. How much higher does Norris and Stutzle go from 7.25/8.5? Does that rule out Fiala? I personally think if Dorion can get Norris signed by the draft and get rid of that variable contract we should be good to go.
3. Looks like we get lucky down the road with cap. I.e Zub extension = Harmonic, Delzotto, Holden all dropping off and for Sanderson Murray + B. Ryan buyout (~8mil) opening.
4. Where do you see the other contracts dropping for $$ and term? (Forms/Pinto/Joseph/Brown)
5. Anyone want to do a CapFriendly dive and let me know if any rosters look successful with a 50mil/20mil/10mil split on forwards/defence/goalies? I guess looking at it that way, Brown shouldnt be extended if we get Fiala.
*Again, not here about trade. Picked ANH as they are first on the list. But Zaits needs to leave.
**I pushed it a year so White buyout wouldn't reflect the 1/3rd buyout of 850k each season.

He’s our best player. If he had good linemates , he would’ve hit 70 in his 2nd year

Is it all but certain that OTT will go out and get someone? Obviously not necessarily Fiala, but is the media/vibe out there that Dorion will acquire a top 6 FWD? A question of who not if?

Kinda just been assuming so, but I’m curious if there’s a legit chance they don’t make a splash?

Fiala is an interesting player. Can look like Mcdavid Lite (Super Lite) at times but also goes very cold. Thats just how he is, hes an up and down player. Now do I think he fits with stutzle? i think players of that caliber can fit with just about anything. Hell fiala's center this season was freaking frederick gaudreau. But IMO im not sure hes really what ottawa needs if we are gonna look at the team itself. The defense (People can praise prospects all they want but we just dont know until they reach The nhl level) and goaltending are bigger issues for me with the senators long term. I wouldn't do a trade for Fiala if i was ottawas general manager because you have enough high end talent and skill. I think someone like Perron on a 2 or 3 year deal would be better overall. Vet with playoff experience and scores clutch goals. I think patience should be the way forward for Ottawa's forward core imo. Im interested to see what they do as someone who watches a lot of Sens hockey

There’s a legit scenario they get none of the big guys and look at a stop gap like JVR or Nyquist and keep the pick

Interesting, suppose that makes sense. What do you think will happen? Not what you want/hope for, but best guess on actual outcome if you had to bet?

Best guess, Joseph continues his finish to the season and becomes another Verhaege . They split the top line into something like:

Tkachuk-Norris-Joseph
XXX-Stutzle-Bath
Formenton-Pinto-Brown
Kelly-Kastelic-Watson

Chabot-Hamonic
Sanderson-Zub
Brannstrom-Holden

Forsberg
Gus/Murray

I could also see them going after Puljujarvi. Or a Killorn, Nyquist, Burakovsky , JVR

I’m sure Fiala is a great player but he was invisible when blues played them in playoffs. Perron is also very unlikely to leave STL but guess could happen.

1. Lawson Crouse is another interesting candidate, Size, skill and right age 2. Hiding in plain sight solution is to move Shane Pinto to be Stutzle's wingman (fill in behind at 3C with the signing of UFA Nick Paul or starting Ridly Greig's NHL career at the beginning of the season, not later.) 3. Save the pick or use it to secure a Top 4 RD? I think you are right that the best bet is Scott Mayfield ( last year of his bargain contract, playing behind Pulock and Dobson, NYI needs scoring)

He had close to 31 pts in 25 games (don't remember exactly) just after turning 20 y/o

He's going to be our best player. Well, it's debatable, depending on Chabot/Sanderson/Batherson/Norris

As crazy as it sounds, Tkachuk is in the next tier

Brady is the Captain and will be one of the best power forwards but yes, I think Stutzle's contract will end up being higher than Brady's and he will be tops for points on the Sens leader board this season.

I haven't watched a ton of Minny games, except when they are in town but from Fiala's highlight package and watching Stutzle play, I think the two of them would easily develop chemistry the way each of them play.

The Goalies, like it or not are set for the next 3 years. Thats a good chunk of time for Sogaard or Leevi to figure out who gets the next shot. Writing is on the wall for Gus this season if he can't grab it from one of Murray and Forsberg. I'm not sure if Gus moves the needle for Buffalo but they could give him an opportunity of a starter/split and whatever else in a swap for JJ Peterka (Stutzle's old linemate in Germany for his draft year).

The Athletic did an article on the Top 50 UFA's and expected contracts. It would be wild to see Ottawa grab both Burakovsky and Nichushkin on 7 year deals in the 6-7mil range.

Tkachuk-Norris-Bath
Burakovsky-Stutzle-Nichuskin
Formenton-Pinto-Joseph (Brown likely moved for offset salary)
Kelly-Kastelic-Watson

Ottawa can’t afford that. Maybe 1 guy around 5-6 mill, not both

With an astute GM playing with terms and bridges but also doesn't give any bad contract, they could

But with Pierre Dorion? No chance

Burakovsky 6.3 - Stutzle 8.5 - Nichushkin 6.7 = 21.5
Tkachuk 8.2 - Norris 7.25 - Bath 5 = 20.5
Formenton 3 - Pinto 2.5 - Joseph 2 = 7.5
Greig 860k - Kelly 760k - Watson 1.5 = 3
Forwards total ~50m which would be the same as my Fiala post except Brown gets traded and Joseph takes his spot. It works because we have legit NHL defencemen Sanderson/Thompson/JBD that can play the roles on ELCs and when big contracts come up we drop the B.Ryan buyout and Murray contract in the same season. ~8mil opens up.
