He's not having the best of seasons but i dont think either side is looking at this season as the "real" Marino. I just see Hamilton/Nemec and I wonder if Nemec played Marino out of the top4. Marino on the 3rd pair seems like a waste.

Yeah, I can see the monster minutes he's playing each game. The same way Chabot was being used for us last year. I'd just love to see the two of them together. We don't need a young guy trying to figure out the league. A 600 game giant, to just kill opposing plays is what we need with my big 3 LHD guys.

I figured it would have been too easy if it was just Bostons 2024 1st, JBD and whatever makes the cap work. The Sens don't have a blue chip RHD prospect like Willander.
Sounds like his play has cleared up all that trade chatter.

I think there is a decent gap between those two and Zub. I'm not sure he can command that term/$. He's getting 1st pair mins because he's the best of the Sens competition for that role. He's not playing 1st line mins for NYI or TB. Both those players also had many more years of NHL time.

Eventually that may be the plan but I think the Sens are a better team this year and at least next with Forms in the 3LW spot. I'm looking at next year. There is space this year for a Dman but not one that has term.
I think Form's floor is a 1st line PK and 35pt guy playing 3rd line mins/teammates. That's a very valuable player @ 3mil. If that's what the contract ends up being. Him and Joseph running the 1st PK is going to push a lot of shorties.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>You are correct in your analysis. So many Ottawa CF posts do not appreciate the bonuses to paid and how it affects the cap, or the upcoming expensive RFA signings in 23/24.
And you have laid the cap roster for the Sens in 22/23. I still say the Giroux and his 3 year contract might have messed up the Sens in the final two years of his contract....despite being a good player, and the Sens ability to retain younger players.</div></div>
The 6.5 mil in Cap space would have been the room for a Chychrun trade and some breathing room for other positional options but I'm a huge fan of the signing. I think that's the veteran guy this team 100% needed to bring on to this group. He will be huge for Stutzle, and Tkachuk. Maybe a year too long but he's here. He'll be able to teach how to score, how to lead, how to win face offs and everything else. He was one of the NHL's biggest talents for a long run. I think it off sets the cap he's using.

Does Fiala really fit
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>csick</b></div><div>Ottawa can’t afford that. Maybe 1 guy around 5-6 mill, not both</div></div>
Burakovsky 6.3 - Stutzle 8.5 - Nichushkin 6.7 = 21.5
Tkachuk 8.2 - Norris 7.25 - Bath 5 = 20.5
Formenton 3 - Pinto 2.5 - Joseph 2 = 7.5
Greig 860k - Kelly 760k - Watson 1.5 = 3
Forwards total ~50m which would be the same as my Fiala post except Brown gets traded and Joseph takes his spot. It works because we have legit NHL defencemen Sanderson/Thompson/JBD that can play the roles on ELCs and when big contracts come up we drop the B.Ryan buyout and Murray contract in the same season. ~8mil opens up.

I could also see them going after Puljujarvi. Or a Killorn, Nyquist, Burakovsky , JVR</div></div>
The Athletic did an article on the Top 50 UFA's and expected contracts. It would be wild to see Ottawa grab both Burakovsky and Nichushkin on 7 year deals in the 6-7mil range.

Burakovsky-Stutzle-Nichuskin
Formenton-Pinto-Joseph (Brown likely moved for offset salary)

Thats just how he is, hes an up and down player. Now do I think he fits with stutzle? i think players of that caliber can fit with just about anything. Hell fiala's center this season was freaking frederick gaudreau. But IMO im not sure hes really what ottawa needs if we are gonna look at the team itself. The defense (People can praise prospects all they want but we just dont know until they reach The nhl level) and goaltending are bigger issues for me with the senators long term. I wouldn't do a trade for Fiala if i was ottawas general manager because you have enough high end talent and skill. I think someone like Perron on a 2 or 3 year deal would be better overall. Vet with playoff experience and scores clutch goals. I think patience should be the way forward for Ottawa's forward core imo. Im interested to see what they do as someone who watches a lot of Sens hockey</div></div>
I haven't watched a ton of Minny games, except when they are in town but from Fiala's highlight package and watching Stutzle play, I think the two of them would easily develop chemistry the way each of them play.
The Goalies, like it or not are set for the next 3 years. Thats a good chunk of time for Sogaard or Leevi to figure out who gets the next shot. Writing is on the wall for Gus this season if he can't grab it from one of Murray and Forsberg. I'm not sure if Gus moves the needle for Buffalo but they could give him an opportunity of a starter/split and whatever else in a swap for JJ Peterka (Stutzle's old linemate in Germany for his draft year).

Brady is the Captain and will be one of the best power forwards but yes, I think Stutzle's contract will end up being higher than Brady's and he will be tops for points on the Sens leader board this season.

Laine discussion
As a Sens fan I'm baffled that Laine could be available (although unsure we make the best partners) so I have two questions:
1. Excluding the 3rd overall, Brady and Chabot - What is your expected or wanted Sens return?
2. Who is your best trading partner and whats the best return you're hoping to get?
(remember this is my post, so don't just jump on me saying 3rd overall has to be included or its a non-starter. I understand this, let me enjoy my cake and read the alternatives.)

Laine Rumours Thoughts
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Claesson4Norris</b></div><div>Laine is sick, but this doesn't make sense. It is an obscene price for a rebuilding team to pay. I'd rather have a future top 6 player, a future top 4 RD, a potential future starter, a 1st and 2nd in one of the deepest drafts in years + a 2/3C who can be traded for more stuff.</div></div>
I am a huge Formenton and Lassi fan. I think Gus has a great chance at being a started and we robbed Pits. However, Laine's age would fit this entire Sens window, his floor is 30G which is what we need. We have Brady as a No 1 LW, he would be a No 1 RW and our own draft this season would give us a No 1 C likely. My expectations of Formenton are a little lower. If he ends up being a middle 6 / 1st line PK'er with that speed and gives me the same as my expectations of White. 6 years of 45-55 (18-25G 20-35A) then I would be happy. Same with Lassi, if he becomes a second pairing, great breakout rush skater with a heavy shot for the PP and great puck control, I would be thrilled. It's Laine's age and ceiling that makes this worth it. I would probably include White instead of Tierney if needed. He likely gets passed by our 1st overall draft choice and Brown and finding a 3C is much easier that finding Laine.

Yeah, financially this confuses me the most. Karlsson, Stone, Duchene, ... Turris ... Dzingle ... page14 ... page 23 ... they wont pay but they would lose cost controlled assets to acquire Laine? I just like that his floor is 30G and age fits the window.

I appreciate that you acknowledge these pieces are not nothing. Formenton and Lassi will be great players and I believe that Gus' season last year is a write off and will normalize this year and end up being a starting goalie. Again, I'm not sure why Ottawa was included in these rumours, I'd love to see him here but I don't think we have the pieces that meet the traditional 1for1 centerpiece trade. Financially, this rumour confuses me the most. I don't see this trade as being too far off from a quantity stand point. I was channeling my inner Doug Wilson here. It's his 1st rounder included and his Tierney. Formenton is better than Norris or Balcers, Lassi is better than Demelo and any of these goalies have potential. I feel like Gus has the best ceiling so I included him. Capfriendly is notorious for what you mentioned and I try to avoid that in my posts and love the dialogue (mostly) on CF.

If the sens are trading Karlsson it is the beginning of a rebuild. Perry who is naturally following his aging curve has been on the decline for 4 straight seasons and is signed to an expensive contract he can't play up to anymore for another 3 seasons. Perry would (Should) not be included in any Karlsson return.
Montour is a good start. You have lots of other great pieces roster wise: Fowler, Lindholm, Manson and a blue chip prospect in Steel who will be ready to make the AHL/NHL jump next season if they wanted to keep the roster more intact for a few more Getz/Perry cup runs.

Dzingle likely isnt worth a non playoff team first. But if you're a playoff team, getting a young 20G player on the right side would definitely be worth my 1st rounder 16-31. I'm team Dzingle though and hope he doesnt move. (Sens 2nd best goal scorer last season...albeit with an asterisk on a bad year but still. 23G is a great player) 20G20A players aren't stars but are still a large part of who wins you games.

The Sens trade doesn't make sense from our side. We need Wideman on the RHD side. Dzingle was our second best scorer last year and we have Brown, Batherson, Luchuk, Tkachuk, and White who will be battling for a Center position. Dano is also a LW where we are also deeper as well. It wouldn't serve us well to move Dzingle RW and Wideman RHD in positions where we need help to add to positions with lots of competition already.

It was an oversight on my part. You're right there still needs to be (lets say two more at minimum) I had originally thought about Steen because of age but didn't think there was a way to have him included but maybe someone like Gunnarsson? Clears 3 million and someone like Paul, McCormick from our side on league minimums to fill the spot. Both of these guys will be filling the 21-23 spot on Ottawa's roster and could fill in those here. Or Ben Harpur/Boro to replace Gunner down the left side.
