Laine Rumours Thoughts

Description
Ok, so apparently one of the three Eastern teams in on Laine is Ottawa...even if I don't believe it for a second because he would increase payroll considerably after Dorion just spent the last 2-3 years doing everything to play a team under the cap floor.

Laine is a young super star winger with a wicked release. I would imagine the ask would be a young roster player, a first round pick, a top prospect and another good prospect.

Ottawa isn't really in a position to make a trade like this unless it falls out like the Karlsson trade. I.e lots of pieces but falling short of getting their best prospect or young player included.

Starting with the first round pick, I can't see Ottawa including a top 3 selection with their own pick but would offer the SJS 1st rounder they own. So, they would probably add a 2nd rounder (CBJ or DAL) to make up for it a little.

As for the roster player, the first one that comes to mind is White but he just signed a 6yr extension which they then used in a letter to all of the season ticket holders who didn’t renew to say look at how committed we are by signing White, please buy tickets. Tierney is a little older at 25 but had a solid 48 point season and would be a 2-3 center with RFA rights at the end of the season.

I can only really see three "untouchable" prospects for Ottawa. Batherson, Brown and Brannstrom. (Thachuk as well) The fan base is kind of invested here in Bath. As for Brown, the Sens don't really have top end center depth (until maybe the 2020 1st overall selection) and he is knocking on the door this season for a roster spot. I also don’t see anyway they would move Brannstrom because of his connection to the Stone trade. The Sens are littered with other great prospects though. So I would offer one at every position. Those who have seen Lassi Thompson highlights, can't wait to see in the line up with his shot and puck control under pressure. Formenton will be one of the fastest players in the league, and your pick of Daccord, Gus or Hogberg.

Again, it's a package. Laine is a RFA and the Peg can have this battle until Dec 1st. But this is what I would be comfortable giving and concentrating this prospect wealth into a young superstar.

The latest “rumor” is Laine to the Ducks.

I don’t see Dorion coughing up the money it would take to sign Laine.

‘This is what I am cofortable giving.”

Is why 85% of the trades on here are laughable. Fans want something for nothing, or at least as little as possible.

This is not nothing. But most posts are. There isn’t a centerpiece here though. You’d have to give up at least one of your “untouchables”.

Laine is sick, but this doesn't make sense. It is an obscene price for a rebuilding team to pay. I'd rather have a future top 6 player, a future top 4 RD, a potential future starter, a 1st and 2nd in one of the deepest drafts in years + a 2/3C who can be traded for more stuff.

If Ottawa didn't offer 8x9.5 to Mark Stone (the best overall winger in hockey), why would they trade for the right to give just that to Patrik Laine?

Thats facts. And I'm not even gonna argue, Stone is overall the best winger in the league IMO

Laine is NOT worth the effort.
If anything, Sens should try to land Matthew Tkacuk.
Or, just sheet Tkacuk for $10 mill..-~

Tkachuk is not worth $10 million.. Lol
If he gets $8M that'll be an overpay.

I appreciate that you acknowledge these pieces are not nothing. Formenton and Lassi will be great players and I believe that Gus' season last year is a write off and will normalize this year and end up being a starting goalie. Again, I'm not sure why Ottawa was included in these rumours, I'd love to see him here but I don't think we have the pieces that meet the traditional 1for1 centerpiece trade. Financially, this rumour confuses me the most. I don't see this trade as being too far off from a quantity stand point. I was channeling my inner Doug Wilson here. It's his 1st rounder included and his Tierney. Formenton is better than Norris or Balcers, Lassi is better than Demelo and any of these goalies have potential. I feel like Gus has the best ceiling so I included him. Capfriendly is notorious for what you mentioned and I try to avoid that in my posts and love the dialogue (mostly) on CF.

Yeah, financially this confuses me the most. Karlsson, Stone, Duchene, ... Turris ... Dzingle ... page14 ... page 23 ... they wont pay but they would lose cost controlled assets to acquire Laine? I just like that his floor is 30G and age fits the window.

I am a huge Formenton and Lassi fan. I think Gus has a great chance at being a started and we robbed Pits. However, Laine's age would fit this entire Sens window, his floor is 30G which is what we need. We have Brady as a No 1 LW, he would be a No 1 RW and our own draft this season would give us a No 1 C likely. My expectations of Formenton are a little lower. If he ends up being a middle 6 / 1st line PK'er with that speed and gives me the same as my expectations of White. 6 years of 45-55 (18-25G 20-35A) then I would be happy. Same with Lassi, if he becomes a second pairing, great breakout rush skater with a heavy shot for the PP and great puck control, I would be thrilled. It's Laine's age and ceiling that makes this worth it. I would probably include White instead of Tierney if needed. He likely gets passed by our 1st overall draft choice and Brown and finding a 3C is much easier that finding Laine.

Offer sheets need to include your own picks (aka we cant use the SJS one in the offer sheet - unless someone can correct me on this) - and I would'nt move a top 3 selection for an offer sheet...Although there is a surprising amount of talent that has yet to sign this summer RFA wise.

Laine is 6 years younger, and has already scored 44.

Are goals scored the only metric you consider when evaluating the overall two-way play of a winger? I'll concede that it's better to give big money to younger players rather than older ones, but do you really think Laine will definitely be a more valuable player than Mark Stone over the next 8 years?
