A Mrazek Idea

Team: 2022-23 Chicago Blackhawks
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 10, 2022
Published: Jun. 10, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Last year Nashville traded two 2nd round picks (39th and 50th overall) to move up to 26th overall (owned by Carolina).

Toronto currently holds the 25th overall pick. Chicago doesn’t have a 1st rounder but they do have two 2nds (38th and 56th I think). There’s a little bit of a difference in spots given up/gained compared to the Nashville deal last year, so Chicago would potentially have to add a mid-round pick like a late third or early 4th type thing.

Something like:
To CHI:
25th overall

To TOR:
38th overall
56th overall
89th overall

The value isn’t exact or anything, just an outline of my idea so don’t get your panties in a bunch lol.

Using that trade above, and adding the rumoured interest in Mrazek from Chicago, we can work out something like this:

To CHI:
Mrazek, Petr
Abruzzese, Nick
25th overall

To TOR:
38th overall
89th overall

Again, the value isn’t exact or anything, but this essentially means dumping Mrazek would cost a mid/late 2nd or so.

It also means Chicago gets a goalie under contract for next season and gets back into the 1st round this year. Toronto clears cap and gains an extra pick bringing their total from 3 to 4 in this draft.

Seems like a win-win to me, but let me know what you think.

From all the reports, it's going to take something like a 2nd + Abruzzese to move Mrazek. No reason for the Leafs to up the ante for 2 midround picks.

Dubas isn't giving up a 1st for Mrazek when he can just buy him out during the buyout window right before free agency. Even then that package isn't worth no 2nd and 3rd round pick.

Mrazek is an interesting case. Because he played for the leafs everyone thinks he sucks and has a ton of negative value. Buddy had injury troubles and his style was a terrible fit for Toronto. I think the trade is going to surprise people by how little it costs to get rid of him.

Toronto hasn't had a first in a while so I say it's doubtful that they trade it.

I think the leafs by out Mrazek if it costs more than a second to get ride of him

I think this is really smart. Leafs had traded plenty of picks and emptied the cupboard to some extent. Since it's not a high first I could see them willing to trade down both to free cap and have more picks.

A lot of people are caught up in the 1st round pick being traded but I do this if I were Dubas. Moving back 10 spots and acquiring an additional 3rd is amazing value IMO. Plus the Leafs could always still get a Goyette or Del Bel Belluz at the beginning of the 2nd round IMO. And we get to dump Mrazeks cap hit too, sign me up

So CHI moves up 11 spots in the draft AND gives up a 4th? It's creative, but idk if its enough for the cap dump. It might be depending on who is there at 25th overall and how bad Davidson wants them. But I'm pretty sure we would have just as much luck in that early second round than we would at 25th overall.
