I disagree, upgrading from Prosvetov/Annunen/Francouz to Jones is something that'll help lighten Georgiev's work load and decreases the chance for an injury. A sub 500k backup goalie would allow for the Avs to be more agressive with other moves at the deadline. I think Jones is likely worth anywhere from a 3rd to a 5th round pick depending on the need of the acquiring team.
The Avs give up a second round pick but acquire depth picks for the deadline. A 2C is going to cost a first, a depth defender will cost a third and a depth forward will go for a late round pick. Flipping the second allows for more flexibility with trading with other teams, Instead of trying to fit all these requirements with one team.

An upgrade from depth picks to a 2nd rounder, a tanev trade to the leafs won't happen unless a 2nd round pick is acquired

I think Trenin would fetch a third at the deadline, given previous comps. I figure Robertson's value around the league is about a third round pick, Nashville seems like they're retooling rather than rebuilding. Which is why I offered Robertson over a third round pick.

That's fair, I know he's a bit of a fan favourite in St. Louis. If the Blues are out of playoff contention come the deadline would Sundqvist still be off the table?

Walker and Tanev are interesting, but Walker isn't what the Leafs would be looking for, and giving up a first for Tanev excites me less and less the more time goes on.
The rental market is kind of limited this year, which is why I'd target a guy with term

I mean, that's fine. You can believe that he's untouchable, again I believe there's a world where down the line he develops into a shutdown 2/3C like Cirelli.
I've tried finding where the Leafs said he's untouchable, and there's nothing that comes up. Maybe I'm just not looking at the right places, could you tell me where and when that was made clear?

Who's someone you'd have the Leafs target? And what would you have them pay to get them?
Dubas traded for McCabe (@ 50% retained), who is a 4D for a first-round pick. Oleksiak is closer to a 2/3D al a Muzzin or Ekholm. To expect retention and only give up a first isn't realistic at all.

I like Minten as much as the next guy, but you gotta be realistic about what he'll grow into. He's not going to be a 2C and if trading him means getting immediately better, I think that's a move that'd be worth making.
Cowan is having a season comparable to Marner's D+1 year. Minten is having a good year, but making the World Juniors isn't a lock to be a slam-dunk NHLer.
Gauthier was also a near PPG player in his D+2 season, and he made the World Jrs roster too. He was a solid player, but you would have never labelled him untouchable back in 2015.

Oleksiak is a legit top four guy, the way Muzzin was for the Leafs. I think the Ekholm trade is a good comparison for a trade between the Leafs and Kraken.

Why would Minten be untouchable? His ceiling is what Hayes is currently, which is a middle six forward with bite and size. The only prospect that is untouchable at this point is Cowan IMO.

Yeah, I meant moreso Minten + an asset for Hayes + asset.
Something like:
Minten + Timmins for Hayes (w/retention) + Toropchenko
Or
Minten + Reaves for Kapanen + Hayes both with retention

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>I kinda doubt the Blues would move Torp, but Hayes should be eminently available and affordable. The problem is, you'd presumably need to send some cap back, and the Blues would want nothing to do with all the ones you'd want to send over (Kampf, Reaves, etc). If you want the Blues to retain half for most of three years, well the price obviously goes up. At that point, we're probably talking a 2nd/B-ish prospect. Seeing as how you apparently won't have one of the former for years to come, it would need to be a young player. Frankly, I'm not sure has the right B-ish prospect to offer in that scenario.</div></div>
What about a package involving Minten for Hayes (w/retention)? I like the Hayes fit if he's on our third line, but again I don't really know the value the Blues have attributed to Hayes so maybe I'm off base here.

I mean points are one thing (most of his points are from being on the PP and he's tied for 57th in even strength points), but his defensive statistics aren't very strong this year.
Granted it could be a Gavrikov situation where the team is dragging down a good player, but again he's closer to the Tanev or Brodie tier of defenders rather than being a true number one D on a playoff team

While Knies might not be a superstar he's a rarity in the sport, a big, two-way player who forechecks well. Montreal drafted Slaf first overall in hopes he'd be that kind of player.
Matheson is good but top 20 just isn't true, he's closer to a top 40 D than top 20. I could easily name 20 - 30 defenders that have better on ice results or are a bigger name across the league.
He's a useful player but if he's your number one defender you will not be a playoff team, let alone a cup contender.

Only Way a Risto trade makes sense for the Leafs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SomeonesOffended</b></div><div>Yeah leaf’s still decline that in my opinion</div></div>
I think both teams say no, from the Flyers are still relatively competitive this season and burning a retention slot with term attached is usually a no go for rebuilding teams.
Ristolainen isn't that much of a needle mover for the Leafs , and the argument could be made that at one point he was the worst defender in the NHL.
However he's had a bit of a career renaissance with the Flyers (Nothing Crazy, but think Jack Johnson). In 2023, Ristolainen is basically Zadorov lite, where on a playoff team Ristolainen is a 5D/6D, and Zadorov being a 4D/5D.
The Leafs getting second rounders is important in faciliating other moves around the Deadline, the going rate for mid tier rentals is always going to be a second round pick.

That's more in line with what I was thinking, I guess it comes down to what Anahiem is looking for in a prospect. Any prospect that isn't Cowan, Minten or Niemela is likely given the okay to be traded.
