Next Season v5 Optimal

Created by: Greed
Team: 2022-23 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 13, 2022

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Salary cap reflects the money we would receive in the cap recapture if Keith Retires.

This roster reflects what I think would be the best case scenario if both Keith and Smith retire. Kane resigns at 6 mil in a bit of a discount just so he can play with McDavid again. Kulak is rumored to come back at 2 mil per. Kuzmenko would sign at the maximum possible and be a sniper for Draisaitl to pass too. Puljujarvi would accept a 1 year qualifying offer and get the most opportunity to play with McDavid and inflate his numbers for next year. The going rate for 20 goal scorers seems to be around 3-4 mil, so that's what I gave Yamamoto. McLeod gets a bridge deal. Lybushkin could also be Gudbranson as well, just any RD that plays defense. Perhaps a trade for Hakanpaa using Kassian would work as well, but i was trying to avoid trades as much as possible. Trade would send us Gibson for a 1st, 3rd, and Barrie. I think Anaheim would be interested in Barrie, but if not we can include a prospect instead (Lavoie?).

I feel as though this roster is extremely likely to exist so long as Keith and Smith retire. Only one trade being made, and the contracts all seem relatively reasonable, give or take a couple 100k here or there. Goaltending wise it moves the needle forward massively, and hopefully the defense is an improvement as well. Forward core seems relatively the same.

Wrong. Gibson hasn't been elite since 2018. Even Mike Smith has been better recently.

I would say that the team surrounding Gibson has also been pretty poor the last few years as well. I think on the Oilers (new environment, stronger team in front of him) he would perform better than Mike Smith has. In addition, I think Skinner performed better than both Smith and Koskinen this year (Smaller sample size being the asterisk).

Barrie doesn’t have any value to Anaheim since we already have Drysdale and Shatty

The excuses never end with Gibson. Does he have incriminating photos of you too? You don't have to look any farther than GSAx or the fact that his backups usually outperform him to realize that Gibson is a part of the problem in Anaheim. He's just not as good as his reputation, full stop.

Where's your evidence for this? Because I don't see any, anywhere.

Skinner did not perform better than healthy Mike Smith. Smith was .915 this season, Skinner was .913. In terms of GSAx, Smith was +0.281/60 while Skinner was +0.074/60.

Skinner did outperform Koskinen by these metrics, although in a smaller sample size as you mentioned.

I worry about how much spent here. The following season won't have that extra cap Keith provided so even if the cap goes up another million still less than what have here and bouch and jp and skinner are three guys I'd rather not be completely strapped going into. I get there is ways to work it in but went down a very challenging path. I don't hate this Gibson do think he can be much better here but I want to see skinner given a chance to run with it before making a significant investment.

the 3.4m saved in keith cap next year only, is actually close to the cap relief of sekera and lucic coming off the books in 2023 at 2.25m. combine that with the increase in cap and the fact that contracts like derek Ryan is off the books it should be okay.
