It would have to be a different team doing the retaining, SJ only has 5m in cap and guys to sign (perhaps optional other than Kahkhonen this year but there's still Meier next year), there is no way they retain half of Kane's 7m unless McDavid or Draisaitl is the Sweetner.

Yeah good point. It would probably have to be a three team deal. Do like Tyler Benson and the third rounder to Sharks and first rounder to Anaheim Ducks or Arizona or something... Unless Sharks want to keep the first, they would have to send something else to the team eating the cap. Lol McDavid or Drai as the sweetener haha

Yeah lol, Drai or McDavid are probably the only guys worth getting into the cap mess that retaining 3.5m on Kane would lead to haha.

Apparently though, the Sharks might be getting a rookie GM, so maybe he makes a rookie mistake. On that note, gl to the new GM though who will probably have to extend Meier for 8x8 at the very least, or lose him to free agency because of his 10m QO. I doubt anyone would be willing to trade for him unless they are down to pay him 9m.
