Talk of Marner playing C

Created by: GRIFFIN95
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 29, 2022
Published: Jun. 29, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
It has been mentioned that Marner COULD be moved to play center, most recently on The Leaf Report podcast. Its an interesting idea that could let JT either play 3C against lesser competition, or move to the wing to play with Marner or Matthews.

All other moves are just to see how the team could fit around this idea. I have no clue how Dubas will handle this offseason.

The problem with moving Marner to C is that it weakens our strength on the wing by a large margin, and I don't think the strength we gain up the middle matches what we lose. I only see this happening if the leafs acquire another strong winger.

I mean he is still a good player. Having him play lesser competition could be ideal. Spread the talent throughout the lineup. He wont be traded, so make the best of it.

I would assume that Tavares plays on his wing so he can take the faceoffs. It would be interesting to see this tried out though, Keefe does like to experiment.

It is more important to have strength down the middle vs on the wing

Ya, Marner may struggle with faceoffs since he isnt the strongest guy. Would be good to keep them together for that reason.

    Not in Toronto lol.

It makes sense to have faceoff specialists in the lower part of the lines but your top Cs need to be able to win faceoffs. Marner sucks in the circle, out of the big 4 he's the worst. If they think it's better to have Tavares on the wing, better to have Nylander as 2C and Tavares on his wing, not in line 3. Plus, Kampf as 3C has been good enough, and they also have Kerfoot.

I would agree strength down the middle is important; however, a 1-2-3 of Matthews, Tavares, Kampf isn't exactly weak. Unless you get another winger I think you lose more strength on the wing than the amount you would gain up the middle, making it not worth it
