Batherson is significantly more valuable than Debrincat. He is the Senators best player. He is cost controlled at under 5 million for another 5 seasons.
I assume the context of "3 first round picks" is the Eichel context. Three prospects who were taken in the first round. Chicago is trying to fix their mistake with the Jones trade where they gave Columbus a mammoth return, it isn't going to happen. Debrincat only has 2 years left of team control, and his QO will allow him to play hardball in any negotiation. Chicago has a bit more leverage than Minnesota, but really not that much more.
They will get a mid 1st, a prospect taken in the first or second round, and maybe a young top 9 forward. Something like that. Ottawa is not trading for Debrincat because they won't be able to pay him, but the return from Ottawa would be something like 7th overall, Sokolov/or Jarventie/Etc, Brannstrom.
This return 3 first round picks and Ottawa's most valuable asset in Batherson is pretty absurd. We're talking about Debrincat, not McDavid.
