DO NOT TRADE GIRARD

Created by: Anus_McLeod

Description
Did you even see that cartwheel? You don't trade a guy like that!

But seriously, dude is really good (remember that he was legitimately in the Norris conversation for a good stretch last year), barely 24 years old, plays both sides equally well, plays special teams, and is signed for 5 more years. Even when Byram is healthy and rolling, this team is only better with Girard in the lineup. Don't move a guy like that for a lottery ticket or a winger. If cap is needed, sell high on Compher. He has been a nice piece but will be pretty much replaced by Meyers anyway.

I know many feel some of these guys are underpaid here. I personally think it's all in the neighborhood. However, foregoing the Stastny signing (going with Kaut or Aube-Kubel on the third line) and rolling a 21 man roster leaves the team with over $3.5M in cap space to work with.

Bottom line, don't trade Girard (at least not now). We can talk next offseason if needed, but now isn't the time. That third pairing is a pretty big competitive advantage if you ask me.

I don’t think Nichushkin or Kuemper take those contracts

I'm gonna disagree, especially with Nichushkin, who I think values the comfort zone he's found, but see the description for the backup plan. If they need to go a bit higher on one or both, then just don't sign Stastny.

I rather have them keep COMPHER than pay stastny basically same price. A third doesn’t really move the needle when they are a hot spot for college free agents

I did that trade more to illustrate that they could move Compher and this is likely around what they'd get. If they don't need to move him, they won't. I'm pretty sure they'll move Compher before they move Girard if it's cap they need.

I agree, they may need to move Girard next year to make MacKinnon/Newhook/Byram work, but why do it a year early when he's coming off an injury and a down year due to injury? He should raise his value this year and still has a lot of term left, gives you a better shot at winning, and it'll get you a year closer to Behrens being ready.
