I aint got nothing if I aint got San Jose

Created by: westleysnipez
Team: 2022-23 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 2, 2022
Published: Jul. 4, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
San Jose is getting old and outdated fast. Long gone are the seemingly endless days of the team led by Marleau, Pavelski, and Thornton. They need to turn to a rebuild sooner, rather than later, or else they'll be doomed to end up like Calgary and Vancouver in the 2010s.

The goal is to plan a rebuild that sees the Sharks competing for a playoff spot in 3 years and contending in 5. Follow the path of Colorado. Terrible this season and next, playoffs, then contending.

Trade-off some of the valuable veterans they can for young prospects (<20 yo) or picks, specifically for the '23 or '24 draft. Obviously, that's going to be easier said than done. Couture has stated he wants to retire a Shark and I intend to facilitate that request. Karlsson and Hertl's NMC also will be honoured.

  1. Brännström, Erik [RFA Rights]
  2. Järventie, Roby
  3. Kleven, Tyler [Reserve List]
  4. Zaitsev, Nikita
  5. 2022 2nd round pick (TBL)
  6. 2023 2nd round pick (OTT)
Additional Details:
For Brent Burns in his heyday, this would have been an absolute steal, but Burns is now 37. Despite that, he's still more than capable of being an elite defender with 54 points in 82 games last season, including a whopping 26:00 ATOI. At 4m for the next three seasons, this allows the Senators to still afford their up-and-coming stars while getting an elite, albeit aging, defender.

The Senators would get a great partner for Chabot, who could learn and develop his game from such an experienced player like Burns. Additionally, Ottawa would get out from under the remaining 2 years of Zaitsev's contract, hence the inclusion of Kleven's rights.

Understandably, Ottawa doesn't want to surrender the 1st Round pick this year or next, so the compromise is giving up the 2nd in 2023 instead.

I compared this to the St. Louis trade when he was 38; St. Louis for Ryan Callahan, a 1st, and a Cond. 2nd.
OTT
  1. Burns, Brent ($4,000,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Burns has been a fixture in San Jose for the past 10 seasons, but it's time to say goodbye.

Brännström gives the Sharks a project player; someone they could potentially fix and flip down the road. He'd be cheap enough that he'll fit into their defensive corps without issue. If he doesn't work out, it's not a big loss.

Kleven is a big-body defenseman whose in College right now but could be a formidable force in a few years' time. His size and skating ability are fantastic, even if his scoring ability at NCHC isn't.

In my mind, Järventie is the first key part of this trade for the Sharks, at 19 he's done quite well in Belleville and could be in the NHL as early as this coming season.

The 2023 2nd is the second key part. No way does Ottawa give up the 1st, but the 2023 2nd is much more palatable.

I compared this to the St. Louis trade when he was 38; St. Louis for Ryan Callahan, a 1st, and a Cond. 2nd.
2.
SJS
  1. Mukhamadullin, Shakir
  2. Tatar, Tomas
  3. 2022 1st round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
The Devils have reportedly been shopping the 2nd Overall in an effort to upgrade their Top-Six.

Timo Meier fits into the Top-Six role perfectly as a two-time 30-goal, point-per-game player. Meier fits the age of the up-and-coming Devils better than rumored JT Miller would, with the added benefit of being an RFA next season, not a UFA. He'd be an excellent fit on the wing of Hughes or Hischier.
NJD
  1. Meier, Timo
Additional Details:
Meier is still young, but with NMC/NTCs on Couture and Hertl, he's the one to go.

The 2nd overall is huge to help accelerate the rebuild of the Sharks and gives them their highest draft pick since some random named Patrick Marleau 25 years ago.

The price of a 30 goal RFA winger is high, hence the addition of Mukhamadullin, who is still a very good prospect, but has fallen down the Devils' rankings with the additions of Luke Hughes and Rielly Walsh.

Tomas Tatar rounds out the deal, more of a negative asset than anything, designed to help offset the cap hit of Meier and give the Sharks a serviceable Top-Six winger during the 2022-23 season.
3.
SJS
  1. Kravtsov, Vitali
Additional Details:
Bonino has averaged 35 points the past 4 seasons, even posting 16 goals with these downtrodden Sharks. Bonino would give the Blueshirts depth they need and can slide up and down the lineup if injuries become a factor. At 1.25m, that's a steal.

Veteran guy, good playoff experience who knows what it takes to win a cup, other buzz words, etc.
NYR
  1. Bonino, Nick ($800,000 retained)
  2. 2022 3rd round pick (SJS)
Additional Details:
Kravstov is a gigantic question mark, but at the start of the rebuild, the Sharks can afford to gamble on a young player.

Don't think Burns would waive his M-NTC for Ottawa, and Burns isn't exactly the type of defender that Ottawa has been looking for

He grew up in Ajax a few hours outside of Ottawa, I could see him waiving to get closer to his hometown.

What type of defender is Ottawa looking for? Even at 37, Burns is better than 90% of RHD in the league and gives the Sens quality in the top pairing until Bernard-Docker or Thomson can go.

They are looking for a defensive defenseman since they were borderline terrible defensively and having Forsberg to save us multiple times. Sadly, they are very hard to find nowadays. As of right now, Ottawa has only 2, and only one of them is a top 4 defender (Zub), the other is getting old and isn't gonna be able to keep up with the game soon (Holden)

And I forgot, he would preferably be right handed

I think all 3 trades heavily favor the Sharks, and hey look, another person who bought out Vlasic without using the cap space! Why does everyone do this?

There's an advantage to having usable cap space that you don't use immediately. Start of the season for waiver pickups or at Trade Deadline, when the cap flexibility would allow the Sharks to take a cap dump or retain salary as part of a 3-way trade at a time when those are at a premium.
