Pulijarvi will likely get around $3.5 - $4M, give or take if he goes to arb.

Is that why Edmonton is trying to dump him?

Difficult to say whether the Oilers are actually looking to trade him. There is a lot of speculation in the media, but most of it is based on "sources close to the team", the cryptic statements Holland made during his end of season media session, the manner in which Puljujavi's statements to Finnish media have been translated and interpreted, and the salary cap constraints the Oilers are dealing with. What is pretty obvious is that while JP can look a bit awkward at times, he is a very good middle-six forward who has struggled to score at a level considered appropriate for a former 4th overall draft pick. It seems reasonable to assume both the team and the player are frustrated with that aspect of his game.

The Oilers are probably interested in another short-term deal, with a cap hit that doesn't adversely impact the ability to address other roster needs. One has to assume the player and his agent want greater certainty and financial compensation. Time will tell whether this works out in a way that benefits both.
