Somewhat Realistic V3

Created by: JSEB93
Team: 2022-23 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 7, 2022
Published: Jul. 8, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Update for after Letang signing. Hopefully Malkin follows Letangs lead and takes a discount.

My idea of realistic is no Zucker dump and no big trades. As much as I think they should do the Miller trade - I don't actually see it happening. And considering how much Pens would have to give up to get rid of Zucker I think it's just better to keep him for 1 year and hope he can stay healthy.

I think this team is fantastic down the middle and has 3 lines that can score. If healthy Geno goes from Kap and Heinen to Rust and Marchment - who knows what he can do. Defense sees slight change with POJ for Pettersson. Pettersson came into his own, but I don't see this as that much of a downgrade. And for a team that was 5th in goals against, even being a little worse should still be a solid D.

Option B would get Strome to play 3C and use the savings to try and sign a better winger for one of the lines.

Yeah I'd say thats pretty realistic. I would of course hope to get more then a 3rd for Pettersson, but can't always be greedy

Strome is far more realistic than Copp, NYR didn't trade their first two picks to let him walk for 5.25. someone is going to have to OVERPAY. and i don't see why copp would want to leave if the money is close, he played fantastic in NY

Fair point about the trade - Copp is the obvious questions mark. I would still consider it realistic though. Rangers only have 10mil in cap space with 16 people signed. Kakko, Strome, Copp, Motte, Rooney, Vatrano, Braun and a backup goalie all need to be signed or replacements found. Not to mention next year Chytil, Lafreniere and Miller need to get paid - and they have no big money coming off the books. So it's not that easy for them to keep Copp and they can't exactly get into any bidding wars. Maybe unlikely for Copp to come to Pittsburgh, but I still think it's a realistc option

Thanks!
Honestly I doubt you get more for Pettersson at this point. I feel like he's a fringe 3rd i terms of value. I figured the Heinen addition solidified the 3rd round pick

This is a sick team, but my nit picky complaint would be that Malkin doesn’t have a shooter on his line. What do you think about that? Not saying that rust is a guy struggles to score but he isn’t a sniper ya know

Copp was one of their best players against us in the playoffs I would love to bring him over to the good team

I think it's also worth noting that insiders claim both Copp and Strome intend to hit the open market on the 13th.

That's a fair point. Honestly I'm actually a huge fan of the Guenztel/Malkin/Rust line. Which would fix that issue. But I wasn't sure if bumping Guenztel down would cause a bunch of comments asking why I bumped Guenztel down.

If Guenztel stays on the first line though, you're right he doesn't really have a guy who would be considered a shooter. Maybe bring Copp up to 2C and put Malkin on wing to be the shooter? Or hope Marchment can turn into one - idk.

I was unaware - that's good news. Let's hope Malkin signs for 6 and that can give them enough money to go after Copp

Agreed. He looked really good. Which is bad because it probably raises his price lol. But yeah I love his versatility. Can go from playing 1st line LW to 3rd line center in case Carter has issues.

trust me, I WANT Copp to be a Penguin bad, i think his style of play is what the pens are missing, i just hope the rangers can't move trouba and can't retain their talent.

Agreed.

And I hope as well. I didn't realize how much of a bad cap situation they are actually in until your comment made me look it up. They're in quite the pickle
