I think it gets done next season at the trade deadline after Smith increases his value. With question marks around russian players right now NJ lets Muk and Smith and a pick in a deep draft go for a solid right wing vet who doesn't need to be a top line guy.

...and by 2025 when this is made for he is 28. The core of the team is well under his age so yes on this squad he will be a vet by then.

How you get a solid D prospect and a Smith who has a high ceiling you need help on the blue line..and a pick in one of the deepest drafts in years.

Smith is another small offensive minded LHD. The very last thing we could possible need. He would be #5 in our LHD depth charts. Mak is alright but not too exciting. With the whole Russia thing going on, his future is uncertain. That pick is a third round pick. You can’t seriously make the argument that it’s super valuable. We got a third round pick for Travis Hamonic. This deal is not great, plus Boeser is not being traded anyway
