Description
Is it time we understand that just because your favourite team won't pay for Miller's next contract, that no-one will?

To me, it seems that every fan of every team seems unsure that Miller will be worth his next contract 4 years down the road. While that is likely true, some teams likely will recognize that their window to win is the next 3 years, and they will overpay in future years (year 4-7 of a contract for example) for the improved chance to actually win now. As an actual example, look at Pittsburgh, who just signed Letang, who is 35, to a 6-year extension. In 3-4 years, Crosby and the rest of the players who helped in the stanley cup winning core, will be well past their prime, and a rebuild will be due. With this being the case, Pittsburgh has still recognized that they want one or two more swings at a cup chance, and will pay star players money now and far into the future for this chance. When the window is closed, the increased cap-hits of Letang and Miller will matter less, because the team being iced on a nightly basis will not be competing anyways.

Also, if Benning somehow gets another job with a team in the league, just trade Miller and his 8.5M x 4 year deal to Benning's team in 2026, and still get a top 10 pick in return! (Ekman-Larsson, for those who are confused)

The isles would not give up Wahlstrom in a trade for Miller.

Very true. I was surprised to see the return on Debrincat, and I'm really hoping that Allvin's slow-play of the Miller trade pays off by moving him after the big fish are gone in free agency. It's a great chance his value will never reach close to what we thought it was.

The deal is dead, it was probably something like 2022 1st , 2nd and Dufour for Miller. No chance the isles move their 2023 1st , let alone both that and Wahlstrom

Your reasoning on the miller contract is spot on and he is a picture perfect fit in pittsburgh but there is no way hextall trades a first round pick so it wont happen

Miller in Pittsburgh is what a lot of us want. He fits Sully's system perfectly. Hextall is trying to recoup the assets GMJR and his assistant Allvin traded away in some not so wise moves. Hextall will die before he gives up his 1st. He'd want an extension in place too. If JR sees someone he wants, he will part with assets just to get the jump on other GM's. Hextall is ok with losing a 2nd/3rd and players. He would probably hardball for an extension arguing he could just sign Miller next summer. I hope it works out now, but I think value will be less than some Canucks fans expect

Isles slam down the phone. Realistically I'd trade the 2023 1st, Simon Holmstrom and Bode Wilde. Assumes JT signs an extension
