I think you underestimate just how stupid Fletcher is but that’s not either of our faults lol. Washington fans say Carlson sucks in his end so that was my logic for that.
I am really trying to stay grounded with Fletcher, even after his two overpayments, in which he failed to see what Risto was and for TDA. Time will tell on TDA, he is a premier PP guy and that was one of our biggest weaknesses, i can't fault going for him. If the trade was a 2nd for his rights, i wouldn't be upset, if he added a 4th, still prob wouldn't be, but all 3 of those picks seems like an overpay.
The biggest blunder was re-signing Risto after last year. It remains to be seen if he can ever be part of a stable d corps as a 2nd pairing guy and a PK guy, with a stable system in place that plays to his strengths. We really haven't had that here the last couple years and he never had it in Buffalo. I would've liked 4 ish mill per year for him, average price for a 2nd pairing guy, hopefully that extra million doesn't come back to bite us.
I completely understand what Fletcher was trying to do last year with Ellis and Risto, it's unfortunate that Ellis didn't work out, but he really fleeced Nashville, even with Ellis only playing 4 games. Patrick had 2 more points than Ellis did last year, and Myers was healthy scratched and has already been traded. On the hope of Ellis playing alone, that trade was worth it.
He has this offseason to show he can turn an underperforming and injury prone team into a competitor. He better use whatever he can to get rid of JVR and sign a marquee FA. I wouldn't accept anyone less than JG or Malkin now. I really don't care at this point about assets, the 2024 first round pick won't mean anything to us until at least 2028. If this is their direction, go 10000%, don't do it trepidatiously. If that what it takes to get rid of JVR and sign Gaudreau, then giddyup.
