Lets look at something that dictates a good defensemen. No offense to Girard, I really do like him.
Girard career 340gp +9 or his first 155gp -3
Foote career 91gp +15
The Avs need a smart stay at home defensemen. Has a good shot, has good poke check, can stop you in your tracks. Has learned from Hedman and McDonagh for 2 years.
Foote was drafted 14th overall (by Yzerman who is responsible for Tampa success) . Girard 47th overall with injuries. Byram is going to take over 2nd line duties so no more 20 mins for Girard.
There was a famous defensemen that made his job look effort less and wasn't very quick either. His name was Lidstrom, meaning positioning beats everything. Not comparing them, wouldn't be fair and useless. Would also save them Avs money for the next couple years even after resigning him next year, which will be cheaper than Girards 5 mil. It would also be wise of the Avs to sign Byram before the end of next year if they can, before that AAV goes higher.
If Gaudreau didn't sign 8 for 10 aav, its evident its not about money. Almost gets a 1.5 mill raise from last contract and a better chance at a cup or cups.
