If you click on the tab at the top of the page marked “Teams,” then click on the line marked “Los Angeles Kings,” you’ll be taken to the page displaying all of the Kings players under contract. At the top you’ll see three lines in capital letters, the third of which says, “Projected Cap Space: $2,338,333.” This is a little deceiving, because it includes the cap hits of Jordan Spence and Jacob Moverare, who will go back to Ontario once Drew Doughty and Sean Walker come off the LTIR list (assuming no other roster change occurs). Adding the youngsters' cap hits into the figure shown indicates that Los Angeles actually has about $3.9 million in cap space with a healthy roster. However, two essential members of the defense (Mikey Anderson and Sean Durzi) are still unsigned, and we anticipate that their new contracts will consume almost every penny of that $3.9 million. So fitting Jake Muzzin in, even with 50% retention, is a practical impossibility. Any trade moving him to Los Angeles would require a similar amount of cap going back in the form of a player or players who are expendable, which rules out Matt Roy, for example, as well as most of our forwards.
