JBGM23 Tanev trade idea

Created by: Claesson4Norris
Team: 2022-23 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 17, 2022
Published: Jul. 17, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I tacked on the trade protection because it should go without saying that nobody is moving an unprotected 1st in the 2023 draft for Chris Tanev.

Maybe I'm biased, but to me this team is easily a playoff team on paper, and one that could do damage in the post season too. A top 9 that can match up against just about any in the league, a hard working 4th line with an identity, a great blend of defensive responsibility and puck moving mobility on D, and a solid goaltending tandem.

That’s a massive overpay to get Chris Tanev. Way too much in terms of draft capital and in terms of the prospect you are moving.

Idk I don't agree? I like Brannstrom, but I doubt he holds much value as an asset at all, and a top 10 protected 1st for Tanev and a 3rd is very reasonable for a minute eating elite DFD. His contract is short term at an extremely reasonable price and would be an incredible compliment to Chabot, and he would be a great leader for young Dmen like Thomson and Sanderson. Idk maybe there's a fair value package that doesn't move the 1st, which would obviously be preferable, but I think Ottawa does this all day.

Tanev isn’t worth more than Marino is. He’s also five years older. This won’t happen and doesn’t make sense for Ottawa imo.

Tanev to ottawa makes a lot of sense . He’s a solid top 4D and his contract lines up with a Sanderson raise and would be a good stop gap till both JBD and Thomson are ready

Chris Tanev is a lot better than Marino. Much better defensive impacts and plays a far more engaged physical style of hockey.

Not sure the analytics back that statement. Either way Marino is younger and under control. You can’t compare the two in terms of value.

Care to elaborate? What would you propose, because I think Tanev makes a lot of sense if Ottawa isn't able to make Weegar happen, and I think this is a reasonable price to make it happen.

It’s more about his age so idk what to say to that. Jfresh and the entire analytics community really likes Marino.

I would try and make the 1st Lottery protected imo, I think he could be worth a 1st rounder, but one that is not a lottery pick

The original post didn't have it, but I tacked on top 10 protection, which to me seems more than fair.

Understandable, I just don't like the idea that he is worth a 11OA pick, for example, in a draft that is supposed to be good

Tanev for Brannstrom + 2nd round pick would be much more fair in my eyes.
Theres concerns with his injury history and regression at his age.
