    why not

Haven’t seen anything saying it is illegal. Would be a loophole worth exploiting with teams rebuilding and wanting picks

It’s not as of now, but the NHL would likely put a rule in against it after it happens once, it would also depend on when the trade occurs, it would likely have to happen around the deadline for the NHL not to veto the trade.

It's called cap circumvention and is illegal. This is an open ended term that allows the NHL the right to void contracts and issue penalties against a team that they feel has done something with the sole purpose of circumventing the cap.

This comes from an article from the bleacher report. Basically they can do what they want if they feel the goal was to circumvent the cap.

The NHL has the right to void contracts they feel circumvent the salary cap when they are presented to them when a player and an organization agree.

Is it legal technically per the Cba as it isn’t explicitly illegal. Im sure the NHL rejects the trade due to obvious cap circumvention.

I was aware of the cap circumvention but I mean I think it would be a good move that could squirt by if the circumstances are right. Say kase gets injured early into the season and Nino signed with Chicago early in the season and Carolina calls them up. Obviously there would be an under the table agreement but it’s very shady but I like it. Crazy to see Tampa not be punished for the loophole but this could easily be one Carolina exploits. If it was right after the trade it would be vetoed but give it some time and it could be a good move. I just wonder if Chicago would also be punished for a move like this because they are enabling Carolina to circumvent the cap. But what if Nino signed for a league minimum deal? Would that be cap circumvention? Having such a broad term is not good because it can be interpreted in any way. For example giordano based on projections couldve gotten a $5m contract but he signed for under a mil in an effort to win a cup. Is that circumvention? Having such a loose term I don’t like as it makes it harder to have a certain thing enforced but also easier to protect against something like this.
