Huberdeau

Initial Creation Date: Aug. 4, 2022

Description
This is a major win for the Flames. It's been a roller-coaster offseason for sure, but this is great news for Flames fans.

It may not age well, but it's essentially the same deal tabled to Gaudreau. Everyone wanted Johnny to sign that deal.

It's a year later though, so definitely shouldn't be giving him the last and final offer to Gaudreau. If Huberdeau were to get 10.5x7 in free agency, CGY should be able to offer him 9.1875mx8.

Lol, didn't realize this was an actual signing

It's a year later, but you have to keep in mind you're trying to sell someone on Alberta winters. Not exactly easy when you're dealing with a player coming from Florida. It was always going to be an overpay and that's ok. Would rather find ways to build around him than find another star, not easy to do.

The difference between committing in Can vs Fla.
Weegar will get 8.5m in Cgy lol. Which would be a mess.!?

Yeah, I didn't realize that it was an actual signing. It makes sense that they would have to pay that now without him actually playing any games. The cap will go up 1m at least anyways next year, so worth securing him now than to save a few gp. I do think that he would have wanted at least 10mx8 from them anyways which was what was supposedly how much FLR would have had to pay him although talks were preliminary. So, the extra 500k is for the tax difference, I think.

Actually the tax difference between Alberta and Florida isn't that great. Huberdeau would have wanted 10mx8 from FLR. Difference between 10mx8 in FLR and 10.5x8m in Alberta is like 5m. Considering the low cost of living in Alberta , and that all players are getting paid in USD, after conversion to Canadian, the 5m is probably mostly negligible.

We'll see. I always thought Weegar was the more likely to sign of the two. The Flames organizational RHD depth is poor so it makes sense from that standpoint.

Huberdeau signing should really help the cause I think

On the NHL level, they are solid with Andersson and Tanev on the right side, and then they have 3 guys who play the left-side who can play the right as well, ofc the only one who is a RHD among them is Weegar, but they don't necessarily need him in the long-term. There are a ton, of RHD RD that might be available next year in FA even if they don't sign Weegar (who played LD mostly).

Maybe they can draft some guys.

Chris Tanev has been an incredible UFA signing. Nobody in Calgary was all that impressed with the signing at the time. That being said, he's 33 and plays a hard game, decline will be coming likely sooner than later. It's really only Rasmus Andersson that they have long-term. They've got one RHD drafted in the past handful of years and I'm not even sure he will get an NHL contract.

Extending Weegar makes too much sense.

I think if the price is right they should sign him. I wonder though if he does play the right side just as well, his natural side could be the left side which he has been playing mostly. Not sure if that was just how Florida was using him or that is his stronger side, but yeah they could move on from Tanev.

He said in his presser that playing LD was more out of necessity than anything, but he's comfortable on both sides.

Sutter loves the L-R split on his pairings so I would imagine he starts out on the right side.

If that's the case then, I would imagine that they trade Tanev next year, and try to extend Weegar, or just let Tanev go as an own rental the following year if they don't need the cap.

Looking forward to seeing a more competitive Pacific.

I think they'll likely keep Tanev until his deal is up. The coaching staff and management love him. I think Backlund ends up being the captain, but Tanev will be in that discussion. I think the Flames would like for him to finish his career here.

The aging of the contract is fine. Cap goes up substantially by the time his game drops off

It's simply the cost of retaining elite talent

Absolutely zero issue with that. Im honestly surprised he signed before meeting the team and coach though. Also equally as surprised Tre didn't commit to longer term on Mange now

I’m surprised he signed right away as well. I thought the earliest would be during training camp. Meet the staff, see the city etc.

I think a long term Mang deal started with a 7 and I’m not sure the Flames were willing to do it. They may live to regret that

I think Tre wasn't willing to commit long term, I don't think it was a price issue. Mange said he wanted to sign a long term deal
