I feel like Ottawa still wants to improve their Defense as their top 9 is pretty good

that would be nice. But, removing Zaitsev is improvement by subtraction and once those two Habs guys would be off the books after this year that gives them the cap relief to do that next year

Thats True their cap comes off the books. Buts if they just dumped his contract and traded for Chychrun they'd be in a pretty good spot.

I mean... The Habs kiss your feet and say thank you. Not sure if you know but Byron will probably not play most or all of this year, and Drouin's wrists are so beat up he can't shoot the puck anymore. Doesn't seem like you want to play them anyway, but does that change your perspective on the deal?

If that’s the case then Montreal can bury both on LTIR and this is moot. I wouldn’t want them to play for Ottawa. This is if Montreal needs the cap relief to sign Dach. Ottawa NEEDS to get Zaitsev out.

That would be lovely. I can’t see Arizona just doing that without a massive haul in return. This gives them flexibility beyond this season. If Arizona wants to play ball then I’m all ears.

Drouin will definitely play and even with Byron on LTIR (if Price plays) the Habs need about 1M in cap space so this deal is PERFECT for the Habs.

Why is Zaitsev so bad? Seems alright for a stay at home defensemen. Though clearly overpaid.

He’s a decent bottom pairing D. His analytics are so bad playing top pairing D against other teams’ top lines and the salary is problematic when the Senators will have to re-sign DeBrincat and Stützle next summer.

1. HOW is this a win for Ottawa?
2. Why do we HAVE to get rid of Zaitzev and why so urgently, we have NOBODY else to put at RD unless you wanna call up JDB or Thomson too early and potentially stagger their growth? Ig Brannstrom can play RD too but what better is Nick Holden on the LD? Getting rid of Zaitzev for Drouin & Byron would solve absolutely nothing, especially when we can flip Zaitzev closer to the deadline. Can Sens fans please stop being so freaking panicky about Zaitzev?

Saying Drouin will "definitely play" is like saying it'll definitely rain on the 21st of November when it's mid August. That man hasn't been healthy since 2018... Just no.

If this was really on the table the Habs should take it. Some Habs fans think Drouin is gonna come back at 50+ pts pace, but I think he's gonna have a rough year. He could not even score in the 3-on-3 summer league

He was playing 10 days ago in the 3-on-3 summer league. So that's why I say he'll play. But he was also not scoring, hence why this might be the last season of his NHL career.

1. Addition by subtraction — Zaitsev out (awful analytics and overpaid)
2. They have until the end of this season before they need his salary gone to make room for Stutzle’s extension and DeBrincat and Zub.
3. I really don’t care what they do with the Montreal guys. Bubble wrap them and box them up for all I care.

OTT probably would still take this to free up cap space for next year with all the contracts coming due.
