Canucks 23-24

Created by: SammyB
Team: 2023-24 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 24, 2022

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
CBJ trade - Made at 2023 trade deadline, assuming the Blue Jackets are making a playoff push. Exact return can be tweaked, but this is the value I'd be looking for.

CHI trade - Pretty standard cap dump.

ARI trade - Myers is not a negative asset. That said, we're not going to get a team to pay us to take on his cap hit. A team like Arizona might take him for nothing, though, so they can flip him at 50% retained at the deadline.

RFAs - Dermott, Peeke, and Hoglander all get "prove-it" contracts.

UFAs - Horvat gets his long-term deal. Kuzmenko signs a "bridge" deal, assuming he gets around 35-45 pts this year. Barbashev joins the Russian cohort. We steal a player back from Calgary.

That Miller proposal, given the constraints described, looks plausible now, but I wouldn't count on it remaining so throughout the year. Even if we are in playoff position, it may be because, say, Peeke has a breakout year and becomes untouchable, or KJ and Sillinger both take off and we end up without a need for another C.

Fair enough. As a CBJ fan, would you make this trade today?

No, because right now we need to have Peeke available and we don't know what those picks are going to be like. We could be playoff-bound or we could end up even worse off than last season; we need to see how the team as it's constructed now will work before we can make that call. We simply can't afford Miller as a "core piece" going forward, so he's only useful strictly as a rental, and it would be a little silly to pay for a rental before you know whether or not said rental would be constructive for your plans or not.
