After Savard the Habs are very thin on the right side, he'd be an asset on the powerplay with all the young guys.

Its really not hard to find a veteran D that defends like Barrie. And Montreal doesn't need Barrie for the PP, they aren't trying to win. Much rather keep the younger center.
