Description
Re-doing the 1st Round of the 2017 Draft
ROUND 1TEAMORIGINALPLAYERDETAILS
1Logo of the New Jersey Devils-With how he's played since making the NHL, Makar going at #4 has got to be the greatest regret for NJ, PHI, and DAL. Only 5 years after being drafted and Cale has already won the Calder, a Norris, the Cup, and the Conn Smythe. He has the future of a HOF player and is a generational talent who was able to make it stick at the NHL level.
2Logo of the Philadelphia Flyers-With how he's been playing in the offensive end, Pettersson has the makings to be a high-caliber NHL player. Comparing him to Patrick (who the Flyers took at #2), it is night and day, with Pettersson being the superior player.
3Logo of the Dallas Stars-3 seasons of Nick Suzuki show the beginnings of what could become an offensive juggernaut. Maybe DAL could have won the cup in 2020 with him, or that first-round series vs CGY in 2022...
4Logo of the Colorado Avalanche-With Makar taken already, COL would still need to boost their defense. Miro's still on the board. Easy 1 2 3 take
5Logo of the Vancouver Canucks-Necas seems to be the "poor man's" Pettersson. He has consistent scoring rates as well as play in all three zones. I mean, I'd rather have Pettersson but PHI already took him so not much choice in the matter.
6Logo of the Vegas Golden Knights-The first winner of the dropping players ends up being Vegas. They get their center man in Nico Hischier, the former 1st overall pick. With how he played in his first season, who knows what happens to Vegas. Maybe this causes them to not go all in every single time.
7Logo of the New York RangersLogo of the Arizona CoyotesTo add to the infinite offense that the Rangers were going for at this point in time, they make a bit of a reach (at least according to the original draft board) and select Robert Thomas. Dude's a bonified point maker plus center and LW depth which the Rangers desperately needed at this point.
8Logo of the Buffalo Sabres-It's no secret that BUF needed a LOT of help entering this draft. This is why I am throwing all caution into the wind and going with Best Avalible. BUF would probably do that anyways.
9Logo of the Detroit Red Wings-DET sticks with their pick from before. They don't see a real issue that requires a rebuild yet so why would they tamper with their plans?
10Logo of the Florida Panthers-FLA goes for the other wing/center in Lias Andersson. I don't think the front office would care about trading for Giroux in 5 years
11Logo of the Los Angeles Kings-Kings go for the better center. Vilardi hasn't really panned out too well, partly due to him not being used at all. Mittelstadt would provide enough oomph to stay in the lineup.
12Logo of the Carolina Hurricanes-Having lost out on Necas, CAR ends up with another C/RW in Yamamoto. Decent production with room to grow makes a perfect pick at 12.
13Logo of the Vegas Golden KnightsLogo of the Winnipeg JetsVegas ends up going center again in the form of Joshua Norris. With how he's producing, it'd make an excellent combination with Hischier for an emerging center core.
14Logo of the Tampa Bay Lightning-Compared to Makar, the rest of the defensemen in this draft are just ok. Tampa sticks with their original call in Cal Foote. They want those cups damn it.
15Logo of the Vegas Golden KnightsLogo of the New York IslandersFollowing Tampa's decision to stay, Vegas sticks with Brännström. He was a piece in the trade that sent Stone, a quality forward and a future CAPTAIN, to Vegas.
16Logo of the Calgary Flames-Calgary realized upon using hindsight that they need a goalie and BADLY. Smith just ain't it. It may take a few years for him to develop but if it means having Oettinger wearing the C of Fire then its worth it to the Flames.
17Logo of the Toronto Maple Leafs-Toronto sticks with Liljegren. No real earthshaking moves by Lou here.
18Logo of the Boston Bruins-Bruins go for Välimäki over Vaakanainen. They're gonna get Lindholm at the 2022 Deadline either way.
19Logo of the San Jose Sharks-
Cody Glass (-13 )
With Norris off the board, SJ decides to pick up the seemingly abandoned Cody Glass while also hoping that this guy pans out better.
20Logo of the St. Louis Blues-No Thomas? No problem for St. Louis! They nab Chytil here. He doesn't produce as much as Thomas, but its better than some of the alternatives on the board.
21Logo of the New York Rangers-Rangers take the shot on Tippett. It's worth a try.
22Logo of the Edmonton Oilers-Looking to bolster defense now that they lost out on Kailer, Oilers make the reach to nab Nicolas Hague out of the cookie jar.
23Logo of the Arizona CoyotesLogo of the Minnesota WildPOJ gets picked at the same spot. Arizona just likes him.
24Logo of the Winnipeg JetsLogo of the Columbus Blue JacketsJets don't like the alternatives they see. They stick with their original pick in Vesalainen.
25Logo of the Montreal Canadiens-MTL decides to make a longer-term investment by selecting Boqvist over Poehling. More production plus Texier can play on all three forward positions
26Logo of the Dallas StarsLogo of the Chicago BlackhawksStars add the defenseman they were seeking in Jokiharjku. He brings more scoring potential to a team that desperately needs it
27Logo of the Philadelphia FlyersLogo of the Washington CapitalsPHI uses the first pick in the Schenn deal to take Vilardi over Frost. They see what Vilardi did in the 2021 season and think that it could be more than a flash in the pan.
28Logo of the Ottawa Senators-OTT still picks Bowers despite being warned about what happens after they trade for Duchane. They were one goal away from the finals, they are not letting knowledge of the future keep them from being dumb.
29Logo of the Chicago BlackhawksLogo of the Anaheim DucksCHI moves on from the lost Jokiharju and instead takes Vaakanainen. A 1-for-1 on junior players doesn't mean anything to them at the moment.
30Logo of the Nashville Predators-The Preds stick with Tolvanen. His growing production is nothing to scoff at, if you ignore most of the forwards taken earlier in this round.
31Logo of the St. Louis BluesLogo of the Pittsburgh PenguinsThe Blues may have lost out on Thomas, but they stumble upon a treasure of somewhat equal value, Jason Robertson. The dude is beginning to score in a way that seems at will and, with time, could become a solid top-line option.

Dallas would 100% pick Heiskanen over Suzuki, it isn’t even a debate. Miro is a top 10 league wide defensemen while Suzuki is great 2C.

And that last statement is ridiculously false, if you remove Miro and add Suzuki, they don’t beat Calgary in 2020 and don’t even make the playoffs this year. Miro during the bubble was ridiculously good, he was on par with Makar this year in the playoffs, if Dallas would’ve won the cup, he would’ve 100% won the Conn Smythe. Suzuki wouldn’t even be Dallas’s first line centre.

Only player in this draft class that Dallas would pick over Heiskanen is Makar.

And no, picking Miro over Makar isn’t Dallas’s biggest regret, and it’s far from it. Sure Makar might be better than Miro, but not by as much as people like to think. On top of having Miro, they also got Robertson plus Oettinger in that draft. They got a franchise forward, defensemen, and goalie, they’re far and away the winners of this draft.

Josh Norris should be higher. How is Nolan Patrick way up there.

I did this mainly based on what the team originally picked position-wise with a few exceptions. So while (using normal logic) you'd be right, I don't think that's what would have happened given the GMs of each team at the time.

Thank you for a REALISTIC re-draft. My pet peeve is re-drafting players taken in the 3rd round 1st overall. There is no way ever, that Brayden Point would have been taken 2nd overall in 2014. Ever.

Is Jason Robertson a top 10 player from this draft? Definitely. Is 30 about as high as he would have realistically gone? Absolutely.
